Some bizarre things coming out of the talking mouths about Irene. For example, saying Vermont got hit by Hurricane Irene.

8 million people without power tonight in the Northeast and half of them are in the dark.

So...that means the other half have power?

A ton of flooding - something tropical storms - which Irene was for New England as well as New York City - are good at doing. Very similar to what Hurricane Camille's remnants did to parts of the Appalachian mountains. Hopefully no Mary Ann Gerlachs will come out of this one.

A LOT of media, with nothing better to do other than advertise for Home Depot, Lowes, etc covering something that isn't much of anything. Big difference between this storm and anything beyond a force 1 or 2 doing something to the NE, yet alone NYC.

Yes, while there was some level of threat, I'm sure the fine folks at Home Depot and Lowe's called their media buddies and before you could say "extra meatballs please",
New Jersey Joe was trekking to Home Depot to stuff the Hummer....
I wouldn't call a storm that killed 40 people in 11 states and left 2.5 million without electricity nothing.

Must be at least 80 million people on the eastern seaboard.
It could easily have been much more than 40 deaths.

No doubt do the precauations taken. Not just a free commercial for lowes or home depot.

Before Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm, all the hype was about New York City, hence the 'nothing'ness. Meanwhile New Jersey had a hard time handling a not very big but obviously big enough storm surge (it's not "tidal surge" - storm surge has nothing to do with the tide). What TS Irene did in New England is a classic case of what tropical storms do. What Irene did reveal is that the entire eastern geographical area of the mostly Northeastern United States is in no way ready for a strong category 1 hurricane, yet alone something much stronger.

It also didn't help that tehy had a very bad winter. Remember snowmageddon? So now every resevoir and river is filled wit hrunoff already. Add several inches of rain in a short period and you get the flooding that we're seeing now.

I've since learned that Irene was much stronger at landfall in some places and weaker at others in NC than originally reported: sustained winds of 90 mph with gusts up to 110 mph at a ferry terminal but where the eye went over the wind peaked at 67. Out over the ocean the Hurricane Hunters found sustained winds of 80 mph. Irene was quickly losing hurricane status or was essentially a tropical storm at that time since the overall sustained winds were below 74 mph.

However, Irene was 400 miles wide, which is how big Hurricane Ike was. Cloud wise Ike touched South Florida and the Mexico/Texas border at the SAME TIME as well as had a storm surge that influenced the entire Gulf of Mexico coast including bays and estuaries with surge no where near the actual hurricane.

So that's how big Irene was, even though the bottom part of the storm cloud wise was gone at landfall.

These things are very unpredictable. That is why they are called hurricanes and not himmicanes.

Get it? OK, I'll go back to sleep.

Proving to be an interesting aftermath...

My parents live on halfway out Cape Cod in Massachusetts. When I talked to my dad on Sunday around lunchtime, he said that the had received less than 1/4" of rain but had LOTS of wind. They ended up losing power a bit later in the afternoon.

As of yesterday (Tuesday) evening, power had yet to be restored and they were using a power inverter that my dad built to run parts of the house off of their car engine/battery. They're being told that they may have power restored to their home by SATURDAY. Thankfully, the post storm weather has been beautiful with no real need for "climate control". Thankfully my 96 year old grand-father, who lives about four miles away, was only out of power for about 12 hours and has been living normally since Sunday evening.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Has anyone asked them why they would live there?

I'd assume that there are many reasons starting with the fact that they fell in love with the area back in 1978 when they first visited. Add to that the fact that the house is paid for, grandchildren and daughter within 90 minutes, a fairly temperate climate and I think we'd be getting close. The seafood ain't bad either. Will those reasons suffice?

Peace,
Mr DJA
