If You Need Me
(Wilson Picket / Robert Bateman / Sonny Sanders)

Chess Studios, Chicago, Illinois, US, June 11, 1964

Mick Jagger - lead vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar, harmony vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - tambourine
Ian Stewart - organ

If you need me, why don't you call me
Said if you need me, why don't you call me
Don't wait too long, when things go wrong
I'll be there, yeah, where I belong

Said, if you want me, why don't you send for me
Said, if you want, want, want, all you gotta do is send for me
Don't wait to long, just a pick up your phone
And I'll be there, right there, where I belong

People always told me, darling
That you didn't mean me no good
But I know deep down in my heart
I done the best I could
And one of these days, darling, it won't be long
You're gonna come walking through that door
And I know in my mind these are the very words you're gonna say to me

I still love you, always thinking of you
I still love, love, love, always thinking of you
Don't wait too long, when things go wrong
I'll be there, right there, where I belong

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Five By Five” EP
(Decca DFE 8590) UK, August 14, 1964

One of their best! I particularly like the live BBC version, really good harmonies from Keith:

This is a perfect example of why the Stones were better than The Beatles at covering soul and black music in general.

While The Beatles picked up their chops and inspiration from the pop end of the music spectrum the Stones dug a little deeper and went back a little further to get to what had inspired the rock'n'roll boom in the first place which was r'n'b and the blues. The result was the blackest sound this side of the Atlantic.

Along with a handful of others (The Animals, Chris Farlowe, Spencer Davis Group, Pretty Things...).

Any thoughts on which version inspired The Stones? My money is on Solomon Burke myself...

When hearing Keith's harmonies with Mick on the BBC version, you wonder why they didn't use his voice more than they did for harmonies back in the day...(before his voice went sour) He really sounded great.

I agree totally. It always frustrates me a little on the 1969 - 1973 (or 1968 if we include R&R Circus) live recordings that Keith did so little harmonies.

One man's meat is another man's poison, I suppose. I absolutely don't like Keith's harmonies (and I'm not a fan of harmonies in general, I should add).

Only if performed stripped down like the 60s version(s) instead of with the horns...
