Jeez. We've heard these things in so many different remasters and re-remasters. Still, I'd love to hear Exile in SACD.

Interesting thing on these new releases is they are not remasters but flat transfers from original tapes. I guess no one had heard these albums this way before.

I only wish I understood what that meant. Are they tapes they used for the LPs originally? The original mix? Isn't that what they used for the original CBS CDs that sucked so badly? Seriously, I don't understand what flat transfers mean.

That's what I read on stevehoffman forum. If I understood it well it means they were not equalized for the SACD. what you hear on the SACD is what can be heard in the studio. So it's different from the original LPs.

I think the Goats head soup-sacd is very, very good. Much preferable to the 2009-remaster. And fortunately the japanese haven't chosen the censored Star star...
The sound is very good. Best cd-edition I have heard.

If it's any improvement versus the standard 2009 versions,as it should be,I welcome the releases.

There is improvement. No brickwalled sound, flat transfer from original masters, dsd transfer and SACD quality. Hopefully they will soon be released in high definition quality on HDtracks like the 60's catalog...

You mean on RS.COM to be sure to be at the SOURCE

Seriously, I don't understand what flat transfers mean.
A flat transfer is just jargon for "play back the tape and record it without doing anything else", i.e. no EQ, no compression or limiting, no noise reduction, nothing.

Undercover on SACD should be great.

Will this be the last batch? All of their albums from 1964-1986 will have been released on SACD by then. Will they stop after that, do just the ones that were analog recordings, or do them all? Time will tell...

If only the could release all these albums on HDTracks like they did for the 60's catalog...

I think the chances of that happening are looking pretty good now that they have DSD masters that can (more or less) easily be converted to PCM whenever they want to. Of course, the real SACDs will always be better, but the difference might be too small to notice.

Anything that's unavailable on SACD won't be available on HDTracks either.

A flat transfer isn't necessarily better. It's just that mastering engineers have been messing with the sound so much lately, that a sort of anti-movement has risen. Flat transfers may not be perfect, but it's certainly better than tons of compression plus unnatural EQ plus noise reduction.

Now with the release of Some Girls & Undercover we have all SACDs from Sticky Fingers to Dirty Work. Is that all or will there be more, I mean the newer releases from the 1990s & 2000s?

Releases from 1989 were recorded digital. Is it worth it to have them on SACD ?

I was a bit disappointed for Undercover.
It's kind of boring.

The only exception is Wanna Hold You.
Keith's iridescent vocals on multitracks are really fantastic.

I am now listening Debussy: La mer (Valery Gergiev, London Symphony Orchestra) on SACD.
It was recorded live in 2010.
The sound is great. winking smiley

Excuse the beginner's question. Do SACDs sound better than a regular CD on a regular CD player? And are these stones releases playable on a regular CD player? What does it look like for the future of these CDs? Will it be like Beta and they will stop making the players? Thanks so much!

whitem8,

Do SACDs sound better than a regular CD on a regular CD player? And are these stones releases playable on a regular CD player?

All of 2002 ABKCO SACDs are Hybrid Disc. You can play them on a regular CD player.
I don't see any distinctive difference between SACD layer and regular CD layer because gone are the days when the originals were recorded.
However, they are latively better than regular CDs.

You can't play 2010-2011 ABKCO SACD and 2011-2012 UMG SACD on a regular player because they have single layer only.

What does it look like for the future of these CDs? Will it be like Beta and they will stop making the players?

Lately in Japan, audio makers don't release new CD players.
They are gradually switching over to Network Players.
CD players including SACD players may follow the same fate as Beta.
I am still using lovely SONY Beta deck, though.smiling smiley
