I Want To Be Loved
(Willie Dixon)

Olympic Sound Studios, London, UK, May 10, 1963

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - harmonica

The stars in your eyes set my soul on fire
Your voice is like an angel above me
The touch of your hand drives me insane
But baby, I wants to be loved

I'm crazy 'bout ev'ry little thing you do
I cherish the way you hug me
Your kiss so sweet, honey, it can't be beat
But baby, I wants to be loved

Ev'ry time I ask you for a date
You don't come at all, or you're mighty late
I ask you to dance, take a little spin
You say: Wait a minute, daddy, here comes my friend

I love the way you walk when you pass me by
Even when you try to snub me
You kiss me, baby, when you give me the eye
But baby, I wants to be loved, alright

Yeah, ev'ry time I ask you for a date
You don't come at all, or you're mighty late
I ask you to dance, take a little spin
You say: Wait a minute, daddy, here comes my friend

I love the way you walk when you pass me by
And even when you try to snub me
You kiss me, baby, when you give me the eye
But baby, I wants to be loved

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham & Roger Savage

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Come On / I Want To Be Loved” 7” single
(Decca F 11675) UK, June 7, 1963

Not a bad track but you can see why it was a b-side and not considered for the 1st album. Interesting to note that Brian is playing the harmonica and not Mick.
It raises the question that Mick was perhaps not yet competant enough on the instrument.

Interestingly, does anyone know when Mick was first featured playing the harp on a Stones song??

The other thing that struck me is that why would Brian only be playing harmonica and not guitar as well. Recording limitations perhaps?

There´s no doubt whatsover that Brian was the superior harmonica player, at least up to 1968-ish.

Even so, Mick played on some early tracks - including Baby What´s Wrong and Bright Lights, Big City from the March 1963 demos.

Most of the 1963 - early 1964 recordings were likely "live" basic tracks, therefore Brian played guitar OR harmonica. A bit simplified of course, but that´s what I believe...

He just wanted to play harmonica on the track.

It wasn't considered for the 1st album because it had already been released.

Yep, they should have done 20 albums with blues-covers..that would have been something, and Brian would have stayed happy with everything during that era...

He just wanted to play harmonica on the track.

And he considered himself to be the harmonica player of the band more than the guitarist.

I can't dig anything when Johnny "sings"...

Here he is backing Mr Morganfield:

Very well recorded, and very well played. The great thing of this track is how they came up with an incredibly powerful sound, with basically clean sounds and single line riffs. Got to be extremely tight to do it!

Brian's harmonica on FIRE again, to me, the song itself is mediocre, and the harmonica is the instrument that saves it from being less than that IMHO. eye popping smiley

By the way, I put it on right now here at work, and itunes+crap-pc-speakers is not exactly what I call an audiophile sound system, but is that a keyboard playing along in the

B-side version

I've never heard this. I'm used to the boot demo, which is far superior to this vanilla version. I wanted to compare the two but I can't find the 'good' version on YouTube.

That's what I said earlier.

Here's the other version (note the piano instead of organ):
