I'm not sure what point you are trying to make colonial unless it is to underscore what I wrote. As to equating the mention of boroughs of London (Play With Fire is the only song that comes immediately to mind) or cities (nothing comes to mind) with the English experience, I certainly wouldn't. Interesting to see this thread again. After some reflection, what is really meant by "British" in this context? For the most part, the Rolling Stones' songs were not about British, specifically English, life but something more universal than that so I don't see how "Britishness" really enters into the equation. On the other hand, Ray Davies and Pete Townshend, to name but two, wrote many songs about the the English experience. I would say then that The Kinks and The Who are more quintessentially English than the Stones are. My tuppence anyway...
29 American Cities and States are mentioned in The Stones songs..New York and New Orleans are mentioned the most.
Britain is only mentioned 2 times
How do you equate British cities with being about English experiences? And when did Mick Jagger ever utter the word 'Britain' in any song? Never as far as I'm aware.
