I Just Wanna Make Love To You
(Willie Dixon)

Regent Sound Studios, London, UK, January 10, 1964

Mick Jagger - vocals, tambourine
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - harmonica

I don't want you to be no slave
I don't want you to work all day
I don't want to 'cause I'm sad and blue
I just wanna make love to you, baby
Love to you, baby, love to you, baby, love to you

I don't want you to cook my bread
I don't want you to make my bed
I don't want your money too
I just wanna make love to you, baby
Love to you, baby, love to you, baby, love to you

Well, I can tell by the way that you stitch and walk
See by the way that you baby talk
Know by the way that you treat your man
I can love you, baby, 'til a cryin’ shame

I don't want you to wash my clothes
I don't want you to keep a home
I don't want to 'cause I'm sad and blue
I just wanna make love to you, baby
Love to you, baby, love to you, baby, love to you, yes

I don't want you to wash my clothes
I don't want you to keep a home
I don't want to 'cause I'm sad and blue
I just wanna make love to you, baby
Love to you, baby, love to you, baby, sweet love to you, baby
Love to you, baby, love to you, baby, love to you, baby…

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “The Rolling Stones” LP
(Decca LK 4605) UK, April 16, 1964

Love the Stones revved-up studio-take, but am not a fan of their live renditions at all. You need a female vocalist to work it best if you're going for the slower version, IMO. It's a sexy song, but Jagger makes it limp.

This track swings like F...! Amazingly loud and rocking with only one guitar.

The original was absolutely hot! The slow version that they played live recently (can't remember when) is too "conservative".

Isn't there a second guitar (acoustic?) in the mix?

Might be, but the electric is the one that´s clearly audible - and that rhythm work is breathtaking, imo.

Ah yeah, that B-side of Tell me... So exiting.
Interesting to have a listen to Willy Dixons "Youth to you" as well. Here are the
lyrics:

Youth to you (Willy Dixon)

You know I want you to
Wash my clothes
I got to have you to
Keep and hold
Yes, I want yo' money, too
If I'm gonna give my youth to you
Youth to you

You know I want you to
Cook my bread
I got to have you to
Make my bed
Yes, I'll tell you what you do
If I'm gonna give my youth to you
Youth to you

Can tell by the way that I
Walk that walk
And you can see by the way
That I talk that talk
And you can know by the way
I hold a-out my hand
I think you should give me, ev'rything

I got to have you to treat me right
I really need you day and night
Yes, I want you to be true
If I'm gonna give my youth to you
Youth to you

(piano & instrumental)

A-you can tell by the way that I
Walk that walk
And you can see by the way
That I talk that talk
And then you know by the way
I hold out my hand
I think you should give me, ev'rything

I got to have you to
Cook my bread
I really need you to
Make my bed
Yes, I want yo' money, too
If I'm gonna give my youth to you
Youth to you

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

This song underlines perfectly the excitement of the very early Rolling Stones. It's brash, in your face, bristling with sexual energy and the words that every teenage girl Stones fan wants to hear.

Don't think there were many groups playing songs at this breakneck speed at the time. Certainly not The Beatles. This is punk for its time, revved up r'n'b that knocks down everything in its path.

Can you imagine hearing it in a sweaty club like the Railway Hotel in Richmond or The Ealing Club? It would have been awesome.

And Brian's harmonica - possibly his best ever playing.

The Animals (I'm Crying), The Yardbirds (Here 'Tis), The Pretty Things (Rosalyn), Them (Don't Start Crying Now) & The Kinks (I'm A Lover Not A Fighter) came very close. Certainly not any of the Merseybeat groups such as The Beatles, Gerry and The Pacemakers & The Searchers though.

Bingo! It kicks ass fast, & it's very boring the way they do it since the 90s.

I reckon you´re referring to the 89/90 version here? The live takes from the 60s were breathtaking, imo.

The original version only takes 2.12 minutes, may be to short for these days confused smiley

There's nothing to stop them extending it, as they do with Honky Tonk Women for example, or as they did with Play With Fire in 1989.

Brilliant version, and the Muddy slower original version is just as good.

I'd also add Chuck Berry's mid-tempo 1959 cut. All three are brilliant in their own way.

Yes, all live performances of the track since 1989, basically. The NME Poll-Winners performance is superb, of course.

There are 12 reasons why their first album is a flawless masterpiece, and this is one of them, sizzling with confidence and excitement. Brilliant production, too.
