I'll tell you a little secret. I posted that Patrick Hernandez video as a joke. But I've been watching it all night. Also this one.

When the Buffalo Springfield played this last week they announced "Now we are going to play our (only) top 20 hit."

Yeah, it peaked at #7. The closest they came to having a second hit was Rock And Roll Woman, which made it to #44. On The Way Home, which sure sounds like a hit single to me, was on the charts for only 3 weeks and peaked at #82.

Infamous 1971 hit about two trapped miners who eat a third one.

Back in '71, when this was a hit, I thought they were talking about Nassau county, where I lived, on Long Island, New York. I remember thinking, "Where is all this stuff going on? I don't see it anywhere!"

See, now THAT is a classic "One Hit Wonder."

Legacy groups like the Dead, the Buffalo Springfield, Crosby/Nash, etc., may have technically had only one chart hit, but given their longevity on the radio and on the concert circuit, really don't belong in the category.

That's what's so interesting about this, though. There are people out there who don't follow music, who don't collect records, who only ever listened to Top 40 AM radio. To them, the vast body of work of an artist like Neil Young means nothing. To them, Neil Young is the guy who sang Heart Of Gold. I just think it's fun to explore a world in which Jimi Hendrix and Tommy Tutone are equals. One hit apiece. And actually, they're not equals, because Tommy Tutone did have one other single that (just barely) cracked the Top 40.

Which is the better record?
Which was the bigger hit?
Could it be possible that one of these records is the correct answer to both of those questions?

"Fire" by the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. The flip side (dating myself), "Rest Cure" was a cool tune also.

This is the one-hit wonder .....

.... that inspired THIS hit record.

Cheech and Chong, btw, are not one-hit wonders. They had three Top 40 singles, and three others that came close. Among the musicians who play on Basketball Jones are George Harrison, Billy Preston, Klaus Voormann, Nicky Hopkins, Jim Keltner, Carole King, and Tom Scott. With Darlene Love, Michelle Phillips, and Ronnie Spector on background vocals.
