Anyone here who remembers Burundi black by Stephen Burundi Black, a seven-minute piece with African drummers and electric guitar/piano?

I too liked the instrumental Dan the banjoman, - and Grooving with Mr Bloe.

Then we have Rock'n'roll (I gave you all the best years of my life) by Kevin Johnson.

And not to forget You're so vain by Carly Simon - where a very famous singer did the back-up vocals.

Forgot about this one, mitch?

Their fifth album Paloma Blanca was released in 1975, and the single "Paloma Blanca" reached #1 in the charts in several countries. (wikipedia)

That Timmy Thomas is a good one, he was playing on some keyboard, synthesizer with a drum machine, so that's all him on the record.

There are so many from the 50s, 60s and 70s because radio was built on singes.....the list could be endless here.

"Friday on My Mind"
"Smiling Faces"

and two of my alltime favorites from childhood:

I used to picture some old black guy singing this.....

WHen I heard this as a kid, I used to picture one of those couples in the cigarette ads, or cologne adds singing.....its cheesy, but just goes to show a song that was a relatively minor hit can have an impression when you're a kid.

If you should ever get suicidal, just listen to this song, and this will help you get through it.

Singer Jim Diamond formed the group with former Jeff Beck Group members Tony Hymas and Simon Phillips in the early 1980s.

Great song, great musicians. Still like it a lot..

Thanks. I always thought this group was comprised of 5 white guys, was surprised to learn it was a black group and the lead singer is a woman with a deep, husky sort of voice.

God Gave Rock And Roll To You got some FM radio airplay, but it was not a hit single. Hold Your Head Up is their only Top 40 hit in the states. In fact, it was their only charting single.

This was #10 in the states on December 2, 1967. Just as a cultural reference point, Incense And Peppermints was #3 that week. It may very well be the worst-ever hit record to dance to.

It features some great playing on the Continental Vox organ. Would like to see them bring it back.

The Youngbloods may have had only one "hit," but they were a great band, at least for their first three albums, which are chock full of gems. Very under appreciated. "Darkness Darkness" off of "Elephant Mountain" was covered by Robert Plant and Mott the Hoople among others, and received a lot of FM airplay.

Exactly. Many bands had several good songs that weren't neccesarily "chart" hits. It comes down to picking at nits. Good bands were good bands. No matter what the sales figures say.eye rolling smiley
