i didn't notice this before: "seven singles..."
WHAT!
7seven7?

SuperHeavy was intended to be a test balloon for marketing manoeuvres that are a bit unheard of from the very beginning when it was meant to be sold only on Nokia smartphones. Now that Nokia is out of the picture (despite always being namechecked nevertheless), it's no surprise that the band (or at least Dave Stewart) want to try out some different approaches of how to sell a record in these so-called "trying times" for the record business.

Hence, the advertising hype for a pre-order of their 1st ever downloadable track "Miracle Worker". A pre-order for a digital release? Isn't that a bit too much? You get a data file for buying a download which amounts next to nothing when compared to a real record. And now you can pre-order that next-to-nothing as well. Fascinating isn't it? ;-)

Now they expect to do that 7 times in the very near future. And they will promote the heck out of all of these even before a single song of theirs goes to the pressing plant, which would be as part of their planned full-length CD release.

If those 7 singles were indeed to sell well, it would mean SuperHeavy would raise the bar for future album releases on CD mightily high in the minds of label CEOs.

But looking at Dave Stewart's last marketing scam of the same style, the faux-70s era band Platinum Weird, his marketing concepts look nice on paper but have performed rather mediocre at the box office.

We'll see how this one does but when it comes to the Rolling Stones' singer's presence in this band of sorts, I wonder how much of the pie he gets for lending his celebrity to this experiment in commerce.
It surely is more than he believes a new Stones album would sell.

Mark Spitz responds to Miracle Worcer by Super Heavy

The first single from SuperHeavy’s upcoming debut album is out today, available to download on iTunes UK. “Miracle Worker,” is the title and these are some first thoughts written during my initial listen. Not a review, literally just a second by second, line by line response. The choice to release a reggae single in July is smart. Seriously. I am drenched in sweat from just going out to buy the New York Post and came back to have a listen and the heated, sultry vibe is right. Mick is always a good reggae guy. There’s a long passage in my book about the Stones’ relationship with the late, great Peter Tosh. While you can read their cover of Eric Donaldson’s “Cherry Oh Baby,” as camp or the reggae-tinged originals like “Luxury” or Mick’s shout out to those working under the hot sun out in Jamaica on the disco track “Hot Stuff,” as ironic but there’s also a bit in the book about the long relationship with Londoners of their generation and the strong bond they had with Rude Boy fashion and attitude and the Jamaican ska, rock stead and later reggae music. Even “Start Me Up” began as a reggae track, didn’t it? It’s a real love. One love. What? Anyway, point is, I am digging this more than I would had it come out in say February. A climate curve.

The track opens with a toast from Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley: “To all the lovers who might be thinking of break up or maybe even making up…” and the first singing voice you hear is Joss Stone’s which is also smart. She brings the pop soul, sets the tone. Marley toasts between the riffing. The players are clearly tops and the sound is big budget. Mick comes in and quite literally takes over. He seems to push everyone to the side with those lips and that tongue. He shouts his verses, with the dirty, nitty gritty Mick voice: “There’s nothing wrong with you that I can’t fix. I’ll come running with my little bag of tricks.” You would think that’s it for Joss, but they duet on the hook and sound right together. Speaking of that hook, I think it’s real. Some songs, especially the umpteenth singles by rock super-veterans, search for the hook as they go. This one if found quickly. It’s authentic, Smokey Robinson-esque. “Mick Jagger… Joss Stone,” Marley observes, bringing us to a tidy end.

I can see this track getting remixed dozens of times, but it’s short and sweet as is. “Imagine… I mean think about it,” Jr. Gong offers. And the more I think about it, the more I realize this is a seriously smart move for Mick Jagger as a solo artist. For one thing, SuperHeavy already seems to be about the mysteries of chemistry, something that threatens to explode but instead makes beautiful colors, and feels like that much more of a triumph because it seemed so ragged and unsteady… and so is the best Stones material.

Now that Nokia is out of the picture (despite always being namechecked nevertheless), it's no surprise that the band (or at least Dave Stewart) want to try out some different approaches of how to sell a record in these so-called "trying times" for the record business.

After reading the above, I decided to check if Wikipedia had an entry on them, specifically anything about the Nokia connection, and saw this:

"Initially conceived to help promote the launch of a new platform being developed by Nokia for entertainment media on their smartphones, the band originally comprised of The Rolling Stones lead vocalist Mick Jagger, former Eurythmics guitarist Dave Stewart, Devon singer Joss Stone, and Bob Marley's youngest son Damian. Jagger and Stewart then called in Indian musician A.? R. Rahman, who is regarded as the world's most prominent composer.

Eventually the Nokia deal collapsed. They decided to continue, presenting themselves as having formed completely on their own, and not as a somewhat prefabricated unit, put together mainly for a communications corporation. The group began the works of their self-titled debut album in early 2009 when Jagger, Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian and Rahman experimented at a studio in Los Angeles, trying to "write songs which had meaning". They recorded about 35 hours of music with some songs originally lasting "an hour and 10 minutes" before they were whittled down. The album was previewed at Jim Henson Studios, Los Angeles, on 30 June 2011. The band played eight of the recorded songs at the event. Their debut single, "Miracle Worker", released on 6 July to mostly positive reviews.
"

Seems pretty accurate, but I wonder how long the parts in bold will stay.

I don't see any problem. Nokia or not - who cares? It doesn't matter how it started but the fact they continued without any label or other money sourse involved in the project tells they had the balls and chutzpah.

Once more time - so what? Keith Richards tells the story about ALO and the kitchen and how Tears Go By was the first song they ever composed.
They are creative artists for God's sake, let them be creativewinking smiley

i´m really looking forward to whole project. i like it when to stones put in some multicultural influences like in continental drift or can you hear the music or even paint it black. so mick had to chance now, to go some new musical ways. the problem is with his actual singin´ IMO that he´s some kind of overacting with his voice. first i recognized it in plundered my soul (where i get used to his singing and now i love it) then watching the river flow and now miracle worker. i think he´s trying (after the big succes of the exile reissue) to sound like on exile or younger and more aggressive then his is. i like his lower key, darker key singin a lot more like on love is strong for example (in his later years). i think it´s no problem to admit, that he can´t sing the same style authentacly like when he was 20. and i think on miracle worker it would fit a lot better when his voice sound more relaxed. i mean it´s a reggae tune...

Then why don't they have the balls and chutzpah to just tell the truth?

Position 45 on Austrian iTunes-charts but no idea how often it was sold.

But who cares anyway - for me this "project" or however one may call it is pure fun. I like the song, like the voices and within 3 days I heard this tune more often than ABB in 6 years.

I like it and for the first time in years I'm looking forward to an album release.

It's fu***ng shit, what à shame that miss Jagger don't seem to care about the 50th anniversary coming up, doing this shit instead. I know that he never cared about the fans, but this shit is to much. It's over, i would never pay to listening to this.

Mick it seems to me, really owes it to JumpinJeppeFlash to start recording a new album with Keith and planning the 2012 tour.

Jagger said the group would wait for reaction to the album before deciding if the supergroup will go on tour.

“We’ll probably end up playing in the unclassified gig section,” Stewart quipped.

“Yeah, in a tent at Glastonbury with the unclassifiable acts,” Jagger added.
