Berlin 1973, October 19 - even better than Brussels first show
Posted by: kleermaker ()

How many people did listen to the last show of the European 1973 tour? Though the audio quality of course isn't as good as the Brussels official and Brussels bootleg, it's even a better show than Brussels first, October 17. Some novelties that are more than worth a listen.

Yeah, I remember this as a really good '73 show. Listening to it now again and indeed it's freakin' awesome. Mick T in top shape and the whole band is very tight and good. Great Gimme Shelter solo, very good Happy performance without f*ckups and Tumbling Dice is swinging fantastically. I agree it could very well be better than Brussels, but it's hard to tell ... this recording sounds really fresh because I haven't heard it as many times as the Brussels shows.

Wish we could hear this one in perfect soundboard quality.

I hold the Frankfurt shows up there with Brussels...
Berlin is also excellent.

1973 was their live peak. Much tighter and aggressive sounding than 72 or the raw mess that was 1975. Easily the best guitar sound of their career.

I made it thru HTW before having to get up to take a pee and realizing it was past my bedtime. Sonically, it remined me of listening to my old vinyl copy of San Diego 69 and it was a rough go in that regard. Sometimes it seemed like the sound was flanged or phase shifted which can play tricks on my ear. As to the performance... wow! Brown Sugar thru Star Star were on par with if not exceeding Brussles. Have yet to hear a live version of MrD that i liked, no exception here. Angie was sublime. Hands down the best live take I've ever heard. The tightness of the band, especially on the F/C changes, and the intricate weaving between all instruments was unreal. Unbelievably good. YCAGWYW on par with Brussels. Rambler, holy cow! Prefer MT's leads on Brussles, but the incredible power, tempo, and tightness of Berlin cuts all others. During the fast part of the middle instrumental part, MT and KR were both doing the sliding 7th and both adding either the 9th or 12th (not sure which - i'm no pro) which was almost unbearably good to my ears. All i could think about during HTW was taking that pee, so I'll listen to the rest tomorrow. Thank you kleermaker for leading us to what is now my all-time favorite Stones concert!!!

Berlin 1973 starts off somewhat ragged and slow, but something happens during Star Star - Star Star and everything afterwards is absolutely top notch, even better than 1st Brussels.

Does people here remember Macman; a poster here? He was a real gentleman, but was in a fatal accident 2 years ago. Berlin 1973 was always his favourite show - and he had heard them all.

Really?
I bought this boot back in the day and I remember being disappointed with the perf. To me it was a "file and forget" cd.

Time for a new listen...

Totally. One of their best; good call Kleermaker.

There are several shows that don't gte mentioned as often as Brussles'73 and Leeds 71.
I think Sydney 73 ('Rock'n Roll Stew') is one of their best ever.
As is
Boston '72. I think it is the second show in Boston; not the day they got busted.

Sydney (and Perth!) are great as well, but they are more like 72 tour shows.

Love Berlin and London as much as the Brussels shows.

Love it.

However...my favourite songs from GHS were never played on the tour. I would have loved to have Winter, Coming Down Again and 100 years Ago( played once in Vienna?) in the set list. And a soundboard recording with these songs played.

I can imagine Winter...with MT on guitar and Billy Preston on Organ (instead of the strings). Could have been something.

But great anyway...

Yes, I remember him. A great guy always willing to share stuff. Was a real big Faces fan.
Have just put Captain Acid's remaster for the Berlin show into the cd-player...

It's that way of going out off the boundaries in some places that makes this show so special to me. Such a pity that it didn't get a sequel in 1974/75. It's the musical pendant of thinking out of the box. It never happened again since then.

Certainly true. But listen to it with earphones in and you'll hear much more of it.

Yep. But parts of Sweethearts Together was played in Sparks Will Fly on several shows on the VL tour, if memory serves.

Rank, do you know if this Captain Acid Remaster is available/downloadable somewhere? I couldn't find it here by searching.

I like Come Back London. It's not perfect, but a very good show indeed.

Oh my God - listen to what Keith does at about 53:51 during the break on Midnight Rambler ('Well you heard about the Boston ...').

Instead of the usual hard but clipped chord, Keith lets it sustain for an incredibly long time at deafening volume. The effect blows the audience (and me) away. WOW. Keith does it all four times - absolutely beyond demonic.

I shall listen to this later, but I was actually there. At the time my brother was an airline pilot flying out of Berlin and I could get there and back whenever I wanted, for free. (They were not licensed to carry paying passengers to & from UK, but had flight movements on Thursday and Sunday from Gatwick).

It was an amazing experience. We got right down the front, and I still have some of the confetti.

Worth adding, that while in 1973 Berlin we went to the Gleinicke (sp?) Bridge and happened to be there when there was some sort of "movement" between East & West - which was the most amazing choreagraphed exercise of three armies I've ever seen. Over in 5 minutes as well.

(I also remember, but ought to check the date, that it was the same time as Nixon's Night of the Long Knives in the Watergate scandal. Can't check. Books all in boxes).
