I Can’t Be Satisfied
(McKinley Morganfield)

Chess Studios, Chicago, Illinois, US, June 10, 1964

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric slide guitar

Well, I'm going away to live, won't be back no more
Going back down south, child, Lord, don't you worry no more

Woman, I'm trouble, trouble and all worried mind
Well, I just can't be satisfied, just can't keep on crying

Well, I feel like snapping, pistol in your face
Going to let some graveyard, Lord, be your resting place

Woman, I'm trouble, trouble and all worried mind
Yeah, I just can't be satisfied, just can't keep on crying, yeah

Yeah, I'm all in my sleep, hear my doorbell ring
Looking for my baby, Lord, seen a doggone thing

Woman, I'm trouble, trouble and all worried mind
Yeah, I just can't be satisfied, just can't keep on crying

Yeah, I know my little old babe, she gonna jump and shout
That old train be late, man, Lord, I come walkin’ out

Woman, I'm trouble, trouble and all worried mind
Yeah, I just can't be satisfied, just can't keep on crying, well

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “The Rolling Stones No. 2” LP
(Decca LK 4661) UK, January 16, 1965

Probably their greatest ever blues cover, as well as Brian's greatest moment on guitar. Not released in the USA at the time as far as I can recall.

The true heart of the Stones...this is where they need to be going to finish their career.

Amazing cover by the Stones. Brian's slide on this is one of my favorites by him.

This is my favorite blues song the Stones ever recorded. Played alot in the style of "Down in the Bottom", Brian 's slide guitar is so beautifully played. It's to bad we dont have more recordings of Brian playing alot more songs like this with his Elmore James influenced style. I honestly believe that if Brian would of lived this style of blues is exactly what he would of done.
So with the Stones winding down now maybe they will release some old tracks from the vaults like "Dust my broom" or "Black cat bone" or songs of this blues style that would have the sound and feel that that this great Muddy Waters song has.
And who knows, if this song never came to be then "Satisfaction" might have been called something else.

One of their very best early covers, not just excellent standout slide by Brian, but the whole band is in top form.

Absolutely. The more I carefully listen to this early stuff, the more I think that Bill Wyman is / was vastly underrated.

Can someone please explain why they didn't put any harp on this? It would have been perfect!!!!

Muddy didn't use harp:

Muddy & Johnny Winter didn't use harp:

There's so much slide guitar, where would the harp go? Especially on this most fluid version:

Maybe on top of the rougher version?:

There's ALWAYS room for Mick's harp, in my book! Especially on a blues number like this...

Brian's finest hour. His guitar legacy certainly has been scrutinized on this board, but this is a shining example of how good he was in the early years.

it was 1968 and my college room mate played me this.I was unaware of the "Import" albums then.I had all the U.S.releases,but had never heard What to Do,Backstreet Girl, the long version of Everybody Needs Somebody or Can't be Satisfied. this continues to be a favorite of mine. I've made a few CD compilations of Stones blues tunes and this is up there with Little Red Rooster and I'm a King Bee. Brian's tone and touch is excellent. His sound on What a Shame is equally great. These blues covers were group efforts...tight,well-played and stand up to this day. There's a lot of Muddy Waters in my home and some things he did are untouchable, this is one that I prefer the Stones version of.

The Stones version is simply masterful!

the stones covered it just fine; but you just can't expect to match muddy at his game.
