Moon Is Up
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Windmill Lane Recording Studios, Dublin, Ireland, November 3 - December 11, 1993
and Don Was’ Private Studio & A&M Recording Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles,
California, US, January 15 - April 23, 1994

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, harmonica, percussion
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar, tambourine
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - wah wah pedal steel guitar
Darryl Jones - acoustic bass
Chuck Leavell - harmonium
Benmont Tench - accordian air whoosh
Bernard Fowler - backing vocals
Bobby Womack - backing vocals

The moon is up, the sun is down
You can't have it both ways round
Oh baby, won't you listen to me
We are worlds apart, you see
Where are you now, crying out loud
Where did you go when I needed you

The sun sinks behind the clouds
And hides his tears without a sound
The moon looks on reflectively, so
Spare a thought for me and you
Where are you now, dark are the clouds
Where did you go when I needed you to

The moon is up, the sky is black
I'll sail away and won't come back
The sun goes down, the stars will rise
And dance across the darkened skies

The sun goes down, the moon comes up

The moon is up, the sun goes down
And you can't have it both ways round
So come on baby and listen to me
Cause we are worlds apart, you see

The sun goes down, the moon comes up

Produced by Don Was & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Voodoo Lounge” 2LP
(Virgin Records V 2750) UK, July 11, 1994

In fact, the "drums" Charlie is playing, were a trash can in the stairwell.
Great atmosphere!

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

This sounds like a Jagger solo effort here. The atmospherics are interesting but it's an unremarkable track that screams only too loudly that the Stones have entered the twilight of their career. For this later period my benchmark is the question - would this song have got on a Stones album in the 70s. Unfortunately I don't think it would have.

Spot on. It's one of those tracks, I agree.

In fact it's a Keith track through and through, and it's freakin amazing.
No fence around this baby! I love it.

There's some audience-shot footage floating around of the only (I think?) concert performance of this
at Shepherd's Bush, and that's freakin amazing too.

A very good song. A great arrangement, too. And a great harmonica solo. A hidden gem of the VL album. One of my favourite tunes from the post-89 reunification era.

Embarrassing lightweight piffle.

The closest the Stones ever have been to the Cars! Not necessarily a bad thing.

It's an nnovative little song. I like it, even though it's far from a masterpiece. It worked remarkably well live at the Shepherd's Bush, imo.

Thank you kindly, marcovandereijk!
Dig Keith's move sliding over to Ronnie on his knees -
I'm pretty sure he breaks the law of gravity there :E

Innovative number indeed

loathing is better. one should be passionate about one's music - loving or loathing - either works.

Not a demo though, would be interesting to hear him on acoustic with a relaxed vocal

Always enjoyed this track. The Shepards Bush performance was a highlight on that tour.

... proudmary, doesn't it make any difference to you at all
that after I pointed out that it's a Keith track,
people continued to post that they dislike it?

Do you like the track, or have any insights about it?

with sssoul, I pointed out only what struck me as funny (and typical, too) - and not about "people" but one poster who changed his mind after leaning about KR's origin of the song. This is a joke and rather harmless...
My opinion of the song - regardless of it being Jagger's or Richards' - not much to talk about. Lyrics are pointless, I can't stand the songs with a meaningless set of words
