I’ve Been Loving You Too Long
(Otis Redding / Jerry Butler)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, May 11 - 12, 1965

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar, acoustic guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Ian Stewart - piano, organ

I've been loving you too long, to stop now
You were tired and you want to be free
My love is growing stronger, as you become a habit to me
I've been loving you a little too long
I can’t stop now

With you my life has been so wonderful, I can't stop now
You were tired and your love is growing cold
My love is growing stronger as our affair, affair grows old
I've been loving you, my, my, my, a little too long
I don't wanna stop now, oh, oh
I've been loving you a little too long
I can’t stop now, oh, oh

I can’t, I can’t stop now
Don't make me stop now
It’s too late, it’s too late, it’s too late
I can’t stop, I can’t stop now
Don’t leave me, don’t leave me, don’t leave me now, my, my, my
I can’t, I can’t stop loving you now
No, no, no
No, no, no, my, my, my

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Collector’s Only” LP
(Teldec 6.24321) Germany, June 4, 1980

Bu unfortunately so much weaker than Otis' version that it became almost parodic, imo.

Jagger sounds incredibly weak on this one.

I wouldn't go that far, but I do agree that it's pretty weak compared to most of his other soul / ballad performances at the time, & probably should've remained in the can.

Been meaning to ask Rene, or anyone for that matter; Is there an order he is going through with the Track Talk series, or is it entirely random, or an order that only Rene knows.

Keep up the good work Rene, always look forward to these.

The alphabetic order, I presume...

I wondered that, but didn't think it was for some reason....just looked, yep it's alaphabetical - common sense really! WOuld have been nice if it were random - you would never know what was coming next...but I aint complaining Rene.

Some threads are popping up now and again because of new posts. That has confused me to believe it's not alphabetical, too. But I believe it is.

It was an outtake in the first place anyway, so pressumably they'd never intended to release it in the first place.

The 'Got Live' version is dubbed by screams to cover it as a live recording. The full studio version first turned up in Germany in 1980 on the compilation "Collector's Only".

I just think they released it on "Got Live" because that LP should be filled out with something. I have never ever understood why on earth they could release an LP like that, when there has turned excellent recordings from the period up since. Recordings which sounds much much better that this record. Maybe they thought they could serve it using overdubs???

Pretty weak...doesn't hold a candle to the Otis one. And the Stones lacked the smoothness of the M.G.'s.

they played a nice version of that with John Belushi, didn't they? 1978 I guess.

No, I like it this way. When I wake up on monday morning I try to predict which will be
the track talk of the week. Harder than you'd think!

Surprised to hear this. So the first easy to get release of this was in 2002, on the CD More hot rocks?
To me it was as if had always been there.
It's also my favourite song of live licks.

Are you not talking about "That's How Strong My Love Is" on Live Licks?

Yes, the version without dubbed screaming girls to find very easily, was on MHR in 02.

Jagger never was or is a 'great' singer like otis yet he can still get emotion into a song. I've always kinda liked the version on the Got Live album. IMO it's preferable to the studio-only cut which seems a bit flat in comparison. Even though it's an illusion since the screams are dubbed on.

That's what great singers do, imo. The technically good singers often lack this crucial element.

Maybe it is a bit clumsy but there is emotion in this one. Too much control sometimes can make a song cold.
