...I don't think I really get your question, Colonial.

I thought Voodoo Lounge is one where they seemed to have 'it'. Steel Wheels had been lots of glitz, kind of too polished. Prior to that, 1981 had seen the Stones as a happy party band. The Voodoo Lounge show I saw (Toronto 2) saw the band coming out playing a kind of slower, menacing, Not Fade Away, with Jagger in a glittering green top hat. Kind of a statement that they were BACK, as a somewhat dangerous commodity....the kind of people your parents warned you about hanging out with.

Yes, I really rated the VL tour too...but only up to the point where they replaced Love is strong as the first song in the finale with sympathy (the 2nd Vegas show) after that it was pretty much the Stones painting by numbers.......(the exception to that being the later European club shows......

Most revitalised: 1990 and Start Me Up (the 1981/82 versions were a bit pedestrian in comparison, imo).

Surprisingly vital: I Wanna Be Your Man in 2012 (Wow!)

I would categorize the tours in the following time frame:

I. -1969.
II. 1969-1976
III. 1978-1982
IV. 1989-1999
V. 2002-2007
VI. 2012-

The most revitalised would then be the first concerts of each series...

You saw the Stones on all those tours??

I saw my first Stones concert 1990. My answer is derived from second sources mostly (recordings) and is a generalization.

...OK; I get it now.

I'm with Buffalo 7478 on this:

"I thought Voodoo Lounge is one where they seemed to have 'it'. Steel Wheels had been lots of glitz, kind of too polished. [...] The Voodoo Lounge show I saw [...] saw the band coming out playing a kind of slower, menacing, Not Fade Away, with Jagger in a glittering green top hat. Good point, and my feelings exactly.

Voodoo Lounge always holds a special place in my heart. Think it was not only how good The Stones were but my age and first time to see multiple shows with changing setlist to add to the excitement. Plus there was a little travelling involved, meeting fans and having a great time. Basically, that's what I love about all tours.

Just judging from videos, photos and audio and comments of people I know personally (not being able to afford to see every single show) I'd say:

The ORIGINAL 14 and Counting tour. Prior to the unfortunate end of the tour, the band were ON FIRE and really delivering the goods. 2012 was shaky. 2013 USA was good but not GREAT great, just being honest about the playing and the "energy" and the setlist choices. In 2014 they came out blazing, the tour was cooking from the first show, until the thing was sadly cut short. But up to that point, they were sounding totally revitalized. Particularly Jagger. He has times when he just professionally goes through the motions, and times when he's really having FUN with it, and those Tokyo, Far East and other early 2014 dates were definitely a case of the latter.

I thought people considered the No Security tour as the Stones "revitalized"? You know, deep cuts, no Satisfaction, not as Vegas or casual fan friendly as the last 10 years.

The 2012-shows in England were not shaky, but the pay per view-show was.

This was the best opener they've had in years. A pity they didn't stick with it.

I listened to Bill on SMU on the clip above........the Band still misses him....just that little bit of funky runs and real roll the swing of the band has not recaptured imo..they were a locked in unit....warts and all.

The whole late '90s Bridges/No Security run for me. Loud guitars, really solid new material, nice deep cuts, and an absolutely ripping Keith.

The only thing holding it back was that it was the peak of Ronnie's smoking and waving era.

Yep - they were tight as Dick's hat band on this tour. Loved it. I know it gets slagged off as the start of the Vegas years - but that's a load of BS. Great tour and great set list.

I take the question to mean, "After the Reformation", so, to me Steel Wheels was great, hot, but alotta people at all times it seemed, where VL seemed to feel to me like a conscious effort to strip it down and become more of a guitar band. Mick played on a lot of rockers on that tour if memory serves me. Stripped was a valiant attempt, ah but Father Time......undefeated.

1978: they dropped many of the warhorses and devoted half the show to a new album. It wasn't their best tour, but it may have been their most energetic.

50 and Counting.

Seriously.
When I saw them in Brooklyn, I knew they were in rare form indeed.

The Stones started on fire in 1999 at the Oakland Arena show. That was the start of that leg of the tour. It must have been fun playing arenas instead of stadiums all the time. Moonlight Mile and Shine a Light put in the line-up.

It was the first time I saw them in an enclosed arena. Very special.
