Worst Set Opener? Best?
Date: April 18, 2011 12:41

The LYL thread made me think about this. IMO "Honky Tonk Woman" is the worst opener they have used. Every time I see/ hear footage of those shows Jagger comes off impatient to me. The song doesn't cut loose enough. It always works great later in the set when there is either a sing-along that comes natural to the crowd, or they turn the lights up.
"Jumping Jack Flash" is always great as the opener. And also because I don't like it that much late in the set, where they don't do it justice.
"Start Me Up" is such an obvious opener that it's hard to beat.
I like the idea too of "Everybody Needs Somebody".

I may not be followed by many, but Not Fade Away was a great opener IMO, as Start Me Up of course.

At the Olympia show in 1995, they opened ith HTW and it worked pretty well I must say.

According to the people who saw the Stones-shows in the 60s, Everybody Needs Somebody was a killer opener.

Start Me Up in 1990 is the best opener I've seen to any show. Not Fade Away in 1995 didn't work that well, imo.

Best: Shelley's 'Adonais', followed by Johnny Winter's 'I'm Yours & I'm Hers'.

Worse: 'Under My Thumb' in 1981 / 1982 (it would've been OK if it had the power & drive of 'Got Live If You Want It!').

Yeah, my vote also goes for "Not Fade Away" for the best opener.

I think they could have a killer opener with "Undercover of The Night".

NFA was the best in theory - in practice, it was a bit of a train-wreck as an opener...

Yeah, I agree. The 1994/95-versions were too slow, and were dragging. If they had used that fantastic Bo Diddley beat, it could have been great, though.

that...and....what the hell was the matta with the guitars? out of tune? out of rhythm? it was actually painful to listen to at times...couldn't wait for tumbling dice to start to get the stones-as-i-know-'em show started....

Best opener was Start Me Up: the opening riff, it's up tempo and everybody knows it. Plus: it's the perfect song for Jagger to hit the stage, more shouting then singing.

Worst opener is probably Not Fade Away. Would have been better on the b-stage.

For me, the best has always been Jumpin Jack Flash!! Nothing gets my blood flowing more!!

Not sure if it's the worst, but I remember beign completely blown away by them OPENING with Satisfaction in 97. I was left thinking, if they're opening with this, what the heck can follow?!?!?!

I actually love the Not Fade Away opening from the VL tour. For one thing, I kind of think of it almost as a medley along w/Tumbling Dice as they followed each other so closely. I agree the way they played the song wasn't nearly as upbeat as on record, but I thought it served as kind of a nice tone setter for the show.

I think HTW - at least in the 70s' - was a terrible opener and just didn't really work.

Start Me Up is the best opener ever, followed by Brown Sugar and JJFlash.
I also liked Not Fade Away and Satisfaction.

HTW doesn't fit that well as opener in my opinion.

Nobody mentioned Let It Rock but it seems it didn't work too bad

HTW was brilliant as an opener. They've always had a really cool start to their show until A bigger bang tour, It was like it had all been done before and nothing they chose to open with worked the way it had before.

I don't know about best or worst, 'cause I don't know which criteria to apply.
But to me, the way Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! begins with Jumping Jack Flash is about as good
as it ever gets. Not wasting any time, just *WHAM* in your face rock 'n roll!

...Fan fare For The Common Man followed by Honky Tonk Woman was nothing short of amazing.... They took arena showmanship along with the petal stage and made it epic.

JJF is better as the last encore, not the opening one...
SMU in Paris Olympia worked amazing...
MR - as a one time, yeah, with extended intro... oh well

my vote goes for
ROCKS OFF

Street Fighting Man which opened the first night of the Licks tour in Boston was pretty cool....

Start Me Up is too obvious if 89-90 was the only time they did it that would have been great.

I think You Got Me Rocking was the opener in 2003 at the Fleet Center in Boston - song should not be played live let alone open.

The last time I saw them in 2006 I enjoyed Paint It Black as the opener - Never expected that.

That said JJF 1969 is the best!
