My favorite Tchaikovsky rendition is of his 1812 Overture by Peter O'Toole. In My Favorite Year O'Toole plays a lush of a movie star (Alan Swann) who, shortly after his entrance, is carried up the stairs of his Waldorf Towers suite, when he's drunk, by his chauffeur; but he's not so drunk he can't belt out the main "riff" of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. When O'Toole next appears the next day, he's sober and gliding down the same stairs in black tie singing the same 1812 Overture, but this time with sober agility.

The performance Van Cliburn used to win the Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow at the height of the Cold War.

Tchaikovsky isn't off topic. Keith listens to him when he wakes up.

Yes, but nothing beat hearing it live with glorious fireworks and booming cannons!

<<Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture>>

Wasn't that when Tchaikovsky's Vegas era began? He had an awful lot of warhorses by then.

That's why I think his 1792 tour was the best one.

I think this music was heard in one of Chaplin's movies. Can't remember which one.

...Exactly. That ones is really printed note per note in the back of my mind;
'cause that record was on my parents' turntable all the time.
And indeed: quite a majestic rendition it was, that one.

(I still have their record, btw.)

I heard the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 by Olga Scheps & Orchestra live in concert, past year. In classical music, one of the ultimate best instrumental tunes.

I saw it performed live a couple years ago, and after it ended the audience was prevented from leaving for about ten minutes so no residual hot ashes would fall on us as we made toward our cars.

The LSO or NY Philharmonic Orchestra versions can't be so bad (though I don't claim to be any authority on Tschaikovsky).

From the fireworks or the cannons? Never heard of that happening in DC.

He opened for the Stones.

I forget, maybe both. It was at the the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, in Irvine, Calif, that has an annoyingly long path between the seats and the parking lot, so perhaps that long path was a vulnerable spot most venues don't have.

Actually, the Stones were the opening act for the 1792 tour.
