I don't mean this as disrespect to anyone, but the guy was 97 years old and I'm guessing had a great life making the music he loved! Sad in the passing of an era, perhaps. Otherwise, I celebrate the music and the man.

On a side note, why the hell can't they get Charlie's snare drum to sound like this on their records anymore?

I was lucky to actually sit down and talk with Pinetop around 7 years ago. He had just turned 90. It was at Rosa's in Chicago. He still was playing really well and sat in with some local guys that night. We invited him to come sit with us and have a drink before he played. He said he didn't drink any more, but would have a beer, because "havin'a beer ain't drinkin." I was amazed how large his hands were and the length of his fingers when I shook his hand. He was very candid speaking with a few friends and myself. We asked him how it is doing gigs at 90, and he said he was only doing it for the money. He said the travel was tough, all the smoke in the clubs was hard on him. I was really surprised that he was willing to hang with us for 5 minutes or so and was grateful to have have met and heard him speak so openly.

Given his age all I can say is I am happy that now he can finally get some rest.
Thanks Pinetop for what you gave us in your music! RIP

Saw the guy in the 90s as part of the Muddy Waters Tribute with Bob Margolin and others. He had his eye on the girl next to me the whole show and was playing his best in order to impress her. It was a wonderful show - Margolin was the only white guy on stage, my cousin the only black in the audience.

such a shock, even though he was very old... those old, original bluesmen got soul...
if I'm not mistaken, there's only one motherfvcker from the delta left...

RIP Pinetop, I've got your album "Portrait Of A Delta Bluesman" and it sure takes my breath away!

...
he was one of my favorite blues piano players ever - hear him playing Jimmy Reed stuff, slow and sexy as it should be.
