Best version of Under My Thumb?
Posted by: DiscoVolante ()

I've never really liked the studio-version of Under My Thumb. It's a great song but I think it comes out so much better with the more riff-based sound the Stones developed in the 70's rather than the original marimba-thing, I like the version they played at Altamont, it really got a sad feeling due to the circumstances. And the opening numbers they did on every show during the '81 US tour are amazing, especially Hampton. Bill's bass is so loud and groovy and when Keith and Ronnie comes in it's pure magic. So superior the Aftermath studio-version! So what's your favorite version?

Anyone who doesn't answer 'the original, studio version' is going to be banned, right?

I think that the ´81 tour was the last tour they managed to add something to a 60-ies tune like "Under my thumb" to make it sound fresher and more up to date. If it's better or not - you can judge for yourself. At least they tried to do something new with it to make it sound interesting 15 years after its release. Something they never dared to do from ´89 and on.

1. Studio

2. 1969

Nothing comes close, though '81 was quite good.

i really like the new Ya Ya's version. it's a happier version than altamont. but i also like the 1981 versions, especially the Tempe version. the hampton version is good too but keiths guitar intro is so low in the mix at the beginning that it lacks of energy, but it brings something different to the song...

I'm partial to the Got Live if You Want It version, warts and all.

Studio then 81/82, 69 is good though. ABB version never really packed a punch.

studio FTW!!!

Brian's marimbas playing on it was truly one his finest moments. How can a Stones fan not like that track? Baffling.

The '69 version is good, it is arranged so differently from the studio that its almost like a different song altogether.

The studio version is so groovy. Brian and Bill swing on that thing. I put it on a compilation surrounded by a couple jazz tunes and it held up well.

Definitely not any version where Mick substitutes "woman" for "girl."

"Under mah thumb -- there's a wuhmun..."

Yuck.

Got Live if you Want it

if they were to tour again and play it with that same energy we'd all be raving about it.

Any version is fine
I grew up with Still Life
So, the best versions of UMT and LSTNT are in this album. IMHO

The original studio version is the best one. One of the best produced tracks of the era. So '66. But I also find all the officially relaesed live versions - 1966-1969-1981 - very interesting. In fact, each of them represents very well the given era (Brian-Taylor-Ronnie).

1966- GOT LIVE IF YOU WANT IT!: wonderful opener; the energy, the vitalness - it is funny how different the version is compared to the studio one. Rocks as hell.
1969: YA-YA'S: the slower, bluesy feeling. Tasty guitars. Tight band.
1981: STILL LIFE: majestic opener, weavers top form, updated lyrics. Mick sounds funnily self-ironic but mature.

I am not a big fan of the '81 tour, but UMT is one of the few I loved from that tour. I am partial to the Detroit version from that tour. And the studio version with the marimbas is fantastic!

Exactly (& it even features Brian playing marimbas live on stage).

In visual aesthetic terms, this version is surely the best. Mick is Mick but Brian probably has never been captured as cool as he is here:

Superb vocal from Mick too with his Otis Redding inspired "Gotta! Gotta! Gotta!". The 1981-1982 versions don't come close vocally.
