- saying this is my "local" hero - what are we to deny his right to say that? Making these kind of "celebrating" choices involves always political decisions. Like noticed here, mentioning a name like Ted Kennedy heatens up the atmosphere immediately. Better to stay away of political names.Quote

but paying tributes to some "local hero" of the past, just don't sound relevant or even appropriate to my ears in an international Rolling Stones discussion forum.

Of course, an established figure like George Washington, who has an unique place in American mythology, might sound "bigger" than any lesser, more mortal politicians, but in the end, I think the same principles apply to him as well.

BTW his accomplishments are not American myths, they are facts. We do have a federal holiday called Presidents Day in America.

Besides The Sicilian, my criticism wasn't targeted personally torward you or Washington (sorry doing that indirectly) but I just expressed an opinion concerning over-all these kind of political threads. But just my opinion, and it totally alright with me if people find these alright. Democracy speaks, right?

Happy 79th birthday to Ted Kennedy. He's likely spinning in his grave over the things that have gone on since his passing, starting with his seat in the senate being taken by a Tea Party pinup boy.

By the way, I knew right after I'd responded to TOMK that it was stupid. Of course this isn't a political blog. Thank god. Political postings here have about as much relevance as a Grateful Dead thread.

I was surprised to hear Jimmy Carter recently say that if it wasn't for Ted K,
we would have had a national health insurance plan. JC claims Ted K shut down his
plan for selfish reasons.
In any case George W was a bit reluctant to be president, but he rose to the occasion, and without precedent his effort was extraordinary.

He's not spinning in any grave...he's rotting in hell, struggling to breathe in a car submerged in water for the rest of eternity.
