Ineedadrink, I am not against discussing politics per se, but what I know from the experience that is not possible to keep it civil here. I can see the point of BV's policy here. I am interested in history as well - especially history of USA, and of course, of Finland - but paying tributes to some "local hero" of the past, just don't sound relevant or even appropriate to my ears in an international Rolling Stones discussion forum. It is, of course, nice to learn things - say, of Portugal kings or whoever or whatever - but I think it deserves another place annd time. And besides the problem comes soon in where to put the line: if one comes to celebrate guys such as Stalin, Hitler, Saddam Hussein or Gaddafi, or even George W. Bush - saying this is my "local" hero - what are we to deny his right to say that? Making these kind of "celebrating" choices involves always political decisions. Like noticed here, mentioning a name like Ted Kennedy heatens up the atmosphere immediately. Better to stay away of political names.

Of course, an established figure like George Washington, who has an unique place in American mythology, might sound "bigger" than any lesser, more mortal politicians, but in the end, I think the same principles apply to him as well.

Yeah, his accomplishments are facts but the way people see them, and how much those accomplishments mean to them, even to have federal holidays, implies that he enjoys a mythological status in the history of he United States. The facts alone doesn't mean anything unless they are interpreted within a bigger scheme of things, involving things people are rating good and honourable and whatever - then they will have a significance. Any nation, country, common-wealth, whatever you call it, has own common myths that is remarkable part of their identity. I think USA is a prime example of that. Since a class-free democracy is such a central piece American identity, it is natural that the constitution, the "fathers", the presidential institution, and of course, the first president, are central pieces of attention, of myth-making. Besides, since such a long time has happend of those late 18th Century days - when history actually was made - probably the "facts" are not so easily to be known any longer - just stories repeated. I think it is difficult for many other nations to find such old heroes, since in many countries the political system, regimes, kings and presidents, are changed quite many times, and there is not such a long and lasting tale to tell. And if there is, some portions are like that no-one sees reason to pay any horonic sense to them... Especially true of many European countries.

Just saw A HBO series of that Adams guy. It was very interesting to see those scenes illustrated.

Besides The Sicilian, my criticism wasn't targeted personally torward you or Washington (sorry doing that indirectly) but I just expressed an opinion concerning over-all these kind of political threads. But just my opinion, and it totally alright with me if people find these alright. Democracy speaks, right?

I don't consider it political but a historical thread. Inevitably, history is filled with politics but it was not my intention.

Washington's leadership in the founding of the United States was a end to the monarchical rule that dominated the European continent and its colonies. At least on our side of the world. It helped spawn the French Revolution and other struggles in the world. The birth of a democratic republic. It was a defining moment in world history.

All true, including Carter on Teddy. Ted probably wanted to deny Carter a triumph so Ted's chances to eventually become President were better.

Washington was a great statesman. Fact: The army wanted to make him king of the USA but he stopped them from going after congress when the continental congress would not pay them. I think there are some lessons for all leaders in that, especially in light of current events.

Besides who was a better guitarist RW vs MT vs George Washington? Sorry I couldn't resist.

I don't see the slightest trace of relation to the matter subject of this board, viz to the Stones, to rock n roll, not even to music in general.

I believe this board is as per the moderator's posting policies not the place for any political or religious discussion. Particularly, there's no need to discuss any nationl politics, may it the be US politics, or the Finnish or the Portuguese or whichever, and, I believe there are other, more suitable boards where US national politics may be debated.

Prussia's Frederick the Great wrote to Voltaire that selling one's subjects to the English was like selling "cattle to have their throats cut."

It was this Hessian army that provided Washington with his country saving victory in the first battle of Trenton. This coming on the heels of major defeats in New York.
