Rolling Stones Festival in Birmingham

The event on September 14 will mark the 50th anniversary of their first ever gig in Birmingham.

There'll be plenty of satisfaction in store for Rolling Stones fans in Birmingham soon. Nearly four hours of live music and the screening of a new documentary will make up a special Rolling Stones Festival in Kings Heath.

It will be held on Saturday, September 14, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first ever performance in Birmingham at the former Ritz Ballroom. Local residents Bob Prew and Ken Whittaker, who are behind the Kings Heath Walk of Fame, are organising the event.

They said: “The Rolling Stones are one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands of all time and it is amazing to think that they once played in Kings Heath.“We are determined to keep the spirit of the Ritz alive, despite the fire that destroyed the building in March.

“We have already held some great events this year to celebrate appearances at the ballroom by The Beatles, The Kinks and Dusty Springfield but we want as many Stones fans as possible to come to Kings Heath to make this the biggest and best so far.”

Formed in London in 1962 by Brian Jones after he met up with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who had been childhood friends, the Rolling Stones started out as a blues group, taking their name from the title of a song by Muddy Waters.

For the whole of 1962, they played exclusively in the London area. But all that changed on on June 7, 1963, after they released their first single, a cover of Chuck Berry’s Come On.

Just a few months later, on September 14, 1963, they played one of their first-ever gigs outside London and their first-ever in Birmingham at the Ritz Ballroom.

Joining them on the tiny stage were Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. Later the same night they went on to perform at The Plaza in Old Hill, another of the clubs owned by legendary Irish couple Ma and Pa Regan.

The next evening they had to return to London to play at The Great Pop Prom at the Royal Albert Hall.

This year’s festival will start at 1pm at Fletchers Bar in York Road, opposite the former ballroom, with the screening of a new documentary about the early days of the Rolling Stones.

Top local musicians will then perform their favourite Rolling Stones songs. Many special guests have been invited including The Modernaires, who were once the resident band. For ticket prices and information: www.wegottickets.com/event/237421.

What is the name of this new documentary? Will it be release on DVD or aired on TV later. If you go can you post a review later. Who is producing the Doc.? Is it a UK production or a private independent Co.? Well what ever, it sounds like a great time will be had by all. Have fun that night.

I would go, if I could. I don't know the details about this documentary, but if there's somebody from Birmingham on IORR, maybe he or she can tell us something about it.

Hopefully somebody can update us.

As said before, unfortunately I had tickets booked for the horse racing and could not attend this event.
