The Monkees had some of the best session players in LA on their first two records and some of the best songwriters (Boyce & Hart, Neil Diamond) writing for them. They also had a lot of integrity by rebelling against Don Kirshner and showing some independence.
Though Sting can be a bit much to take, The Police were a fine band, very innovative rhythmically, and they wrote great songs.
I am not a fan of Queen, but there are so many worse bands (Guns & Roses comes to mind) who came after that I am a bit surprised you singled them out.
