Pay Your Dues ("Street Fighting Man" Take 3)
(Mick Jagger/Keith Richards)

Olympic Sound Studios, Barnes, London, England, UK, March 17-31, 1968

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - guitars
Brian Jones - sitar, tamboura
Bill Wyman - bass
Charlie Watts - drums, percussion
Nicky Hopkins - piano
Dave Mason - shehnai
Ric Grech - electric violin
Jim King, Roger Chapman - backing vocals

Chief to scorn his friends
Make love to his relations
He beats his wife
And makes her life
A total wet vacation

Now did everybody pay their dues?
Now did any of them try to refuse?
All the braves and squaws
And the maids and the whores
Did everybody pay their dues?

He's the tribal chief
His name is called disorder
His flesh and blood he tears it up
And actually fries his mama

Now did everybody pay their dues?
Now did any of them try to refuse?
All the braves and squaws
And the maids and the whores
Did everybody pay their dues?

See all the children know he's lying
What's all the fuss
To be grown up
Is to be good as dying

Now did everybody pay their dues?
Now did any of them try to refuse?
All the braves and squaws
And the maids and the whores
Did everybody pay their dues?

Produced by Jimmy Miller
Sound Engineer: Eddie Kramer

Not officially released, but would later be "Street Fighting Man" with new lyrics and no electric violin or backing vocals from King and Chapman.

Here you go:

The sound of the electric violin by Ric Grech, I think that it could be duplicated by playing bottleneck slide guitar (a la Duane Allman on Derek & the Dominos' "Layla" ). But because I hear feedback from it, then that's proof it is just a standard violin with a pick-up on it.

Wow - I never knew that Roger Chapman and Jim King ever lent their talents to the Stones. Great news as am a big fan of Family.

I first discovered this song on the "Thee Satanic Sessions" boot cd, and thought it was interesting. It has a big sound. I always thought it was an electric guitar wailing away in the background, until reading at IORR about the electric violin.

Yes, there are quite a few satanic links to beggars.

As for replicating the electric violin with slide, that's going to be a very hard thing to pull off, I'd like to see someone try!!!

It was actually planned for release for the withdrawn "Necrophelia" LP compiled by Oldham to follow up Hot Rocks but Klein didnt like the line-up and replaced it with "Big Hits and Fazed Cookies" using the same artwork. You can find alot of boots as a few were actually pressed and given an abkco serial number, Vinyl Gang has one.

I've always loved this track even though it's a total mess - and it makes SFM that much better and greater. The beauty of Dues is it reveals the genius behind Jimmy Miller and how good Mick and Keith were at focusing, eventually, on getting it to be what it became, which is the stellar Street Fighting Man, of course - and one of their best tunes ever.

I only knew the slower version with worse sound. A nice upgrade!
Since when available?

I love this track!

It was actually planned as a single (b/w Child Of The Moon), but they changed their minds and released Jumpin´ Jack Flash instead.

And, yes, that planned single would have made the transition from psychedelic back to basics seem smoother...

The best sound quality-version I´ve heard is here: [www.iorr.org]

I'd bet Native American groups would be upset at the song's early lyrics, what do you think?

Since the Necrophilia bootleg came out. It was a nice acetate transfer.

It really impresses me how Jagger recorded a new vocal track over the same backing and made a completely different song out of it. "Pay Your Dues" isn't "Street Fighting Man" with different lyrics, it's another song.

If that's Bill on bass, then Keith just copied it for the SFM studio cut, where I believe Keith played bass. More respect for Bill.
