High And Dry
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, March 6 - 9, 1966

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - harmonica

High and dry, well, I'm up here with no warning
High and dry, well, I couldn't get a word in
High and dry, oh, what a way to go
She left me standing here just high and dry

A minute I was up there standing by her side
The next I was down there, well, left out of the ride
High and dry, oh, what a way to go
She left me standing here just high and dry

Anythin' I wished for I only had to ask her, yep
I think she found out it was money I was after
High and dry, oh, what a weird letdown
She left me standing here just high and dry, alright

It's lucky that I didn't have any love towards her
Next time I'll make sure that the girl'll be much poorer
High and dry, oh, what a way to go
She left me standing here just high and dry

High and dry, well, I'm up here with no warnin', yep
High and dry, well, I couldn't get a word in
High and dry, oh, what a way to go
She left me standin' here just high and dry
Well, she left me standin' here just high and dry
Well, she left me standin' here just high and dry, yeah

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Aftermath” LP
(Decca SKL 4786) UK, April 15, 1966

I think the first example of the boys playing a country song and making it a delightful
piece of mockery. To be continued with Dear Doctor, Sweet Virginia, Far Away Eyes and the lot.

There's piano on this track? 12 string acoustic right?

Great thing so it is!!! One of the many highlights of Aftermath.

Great song. I remember reading that they recorded this as a tongue and cheek "country" tune but then realized that country was in fact pretty cool stuff to listen to and to play.

Yes, but those later songs really mattered. This one doesn't, in my opinion. It's just a warm-up to those classics. The song itself is relatively inert, and the production obviously lacks the spark, beauty, and magic that Jimmy Miller brought.

Nice harp by Brian, though.

I agree, 12-string and 6-string acoustic by Keith, no piano. Fantastic track, I love the little mistake keith makes at the end. Superb Brian Jones as well.

I don't see how the later tracks matter more? Like much of the pre 68 material it's a bit more naive and not as produced.

How can a song not matter? Great track; the "drums" are so purely Charlie.

I am hearing it on fairly cheap computer speakers; does it sound like Keith is doubling the guitar runs on the low strings in the left side? On a 6 string?

Right from the beginning this was one of my favourite tracks from Aftermath. Part rootsy, part catchy it also has this special, wacky charm that's so typical for many tracks on this album.

or else what??? winking smiley

Seriously, I don't like ... I LOVE this song!! (as with the rest of the album. Not a 'clunker' on either side, but of course that is my opinion)

"Doctor please, some more men please,
To Cotchford Farm, out by the pool...

What a drag it is they couldn't revive him"

For you maybe, but this song definitely matters to me. It showcased a whole different level for the band.

play it on the next tour!

Do they have enough songs to do a C & W theme night?

My favourite along with I Am Waiting from Aftermath. A very weird country tune, but soulfully and excellently played.

Another great one. This playfulness and wackyess is something they hardly ever archieved again (growing up too fast, I guess ;-) As early as Between the Buttons this element began to fade (the Kinks-like passages on that album sound much more forced). Maybe Backstreet Girl has a similar tender feel to it.

Gee....really?
I always thought this was the weakest track.
Overall I love Aftermath
