Taylor Overdubbing On Exile Outtakes?
Posted by: 71Tele ()

Check the Jagger Italian interview thread. Someone who claims to have inside info says that Taylor has been dispatched to do overdubs on nine Exile songs! My little Taylorite heart is going thump-thump, but my Rolling Stones brain is very suspicious that Sir Mick would suddenly forgive all and allow Mick T. to be involved in NEW recording on a Rolling Stones project. What's your take on this news? I thought this sufficiently newsworthy to start a new thread. See below:

OK, I've registered just to post this, though I've been lurking here for many years, I know it may appear I'm some sort of troll. An English bassist friend of mine who was viting Al for the NARM show, who has played with several very big groups and is friendly with Mick has told me two weeks ago that Jagger has dispatched Matt Clifford to a studio with nine unfinished songs for Mick Taylor to put overdubs on. I'm not a Taylorite myself, but I know this is going to 'cause a stir here. My friend didn't mention whether Mick intends to add new vocal overdubs, but I suspect that would be the case. I believe these tracks are separate to the eight that Don Was (who is also a friend) had mixed last year, which I would presume were more complete and included things like Good Time Woman. I have no idea how many songs they eventually intend to include.

Mick Jagger does not behave in "normal" fashion. He stayed on a friendly basis with Allen Klein intil the man's death. Still, who knows when it's all said and done if he'll actually issue these tracks -- though he not only says "eleven" in that Italian interview but "unfinished" as well.

Leave them as they are and release them!!! That's the point of my 'overproduction' thread!

As we all know, with Mick Jagger, that's not likely.

Keith gives up booze and Mick Taylor records again with the Stones.

Signs of The End Of Times.

If this turns out to be true, I'll eat everyone's hat. I'm shocked...

I assumed this Exile release was pretty much done since it's coming out in May. This must be a last minute idea...

How about Clydie King and Mac Rebenac while we're at it? And don't forget Al Perkins (he still alive?).

Mick stayed on friendly terms with Allen Klein?

I like the idea.

I don't care for "half-baked" versions. I like them to sound release-able.

Even more, if Taylor is overdubbing the songs, we are as near as possible with the Exile-lineup. I don't think it's a bad idea.

I would certainly be upset if Ronnie overdubbed these songs, as he had nothing to do with them.

As long as the old Exile Outtakes are in my collection,I don't care.
If they are going to record unreleased material with Taylor at work, that would be great.
They are not going to wipe Taylor from the old tracks, are they??

Hold the front page - I hear Keith is bringing in Amyl Nitrate. And if Tami Lynn's around I think we almost got the whole gang back in town.

Kiss re-recorded a greatest hits disc for a bonus on their recent new studio album.

Tarlé is alive and kicking. Let's fly him and his Nikons to the basement where MT is currently recording!
(sounds like a hoax imho though it could be worse : we could hear rumours that MJ asked RON WOOD to lay "tasty" blues licks on the 11 Exile tracks) eye rolling smiley

I don't like the idea too much. It would be as if Mick and Keith had overdubbed NOW to the 40 years old unreleased recordings that were in the bonus disc on the new Ya Yas. Could Warried About You as released on Tattoo You be presented as a Black and Blue outtake? No way! The interest in having these new unrelesed traks (or bootlegs) is that you have the musical context in which Exile was born. These tracks have an historical value.

so let me get this right.

This "Deluxe" is probably:
1. Exile remastered

2. NEW unreleased Exile songs which were near releasable at the time but have been re-mixed for this release ~ 11-13 songs.

3. A FURTHER 9 NEW Stones songs (different to above) with Mick Taylor providing guitar overdubs of old Exile songs re-done with Jagger providing new/fresh vocals ??

Am I reading this right?
It all seems bizarre to me...Jagger is going loopy isn't he? It's completely un-Jagger IMO.

Hopefully it's correct.

>> Am I reading this right? <<

... as far as i can tell: no, you're not.
i don't think anyone's saying the tracks Mick T is supposedly adding overdubs to
are different from the 11 tracks mentioned in the Italian interview
(and it's still not clear that all of them really are being released.
lest we forget: the reviews of the European Gimme Shelter reissue said it would include previously-unreleased stuff,
but it didn't. who knows why. things change twixt the cup and the lip and all that)

Deluxe Ya Ya's was formerly announced and detailed 3-4 months in advance. Time to do the same with Exile.

I'm sure it was a case of necessity back then, but if the extras are all acoustic, it's because Jag's a tight arse.

While we're in Dreamland

A new double album even better than Exile.

A scaled down tour of clubs with tickets at $5 each.

I'm sceptical towards new overdubs on historical 40 year old recordings. But I'm also a little bored with unfinished tracks. So if Taylor would add some nice lead guitar, that would be pretty exciting, if only for being such an unexpected thing from the Stones.

If lead guitar really would be needed, I can see no better person to do it than Taylor. But me too, would eat my hat if it happened.
