Who is really the greatest musical artist?
Posted by: Bliss ()
Date: September 9, 2012 11:09

It should be someone who ideally excels as a musician, vocalist, lyricist, composer and performer, and whose originality pushed the artistic standards and boundaries of his/her time higher. Obviously, no one is at the top in all those categories, and it's possible to miss out on one category altogether, eg, Elton John is not a lyricist.

Contenders:

Mick Jagger
Michael Jackson
Joni Mitchell
Jim Morrison
John Lennon
Jimi Hendrix

It seems essential to have your name begin with J.

Bob Dylan

Dylan excels as a lyricist but hardly as a vocalist, his compositions aren't all that great, guitar playing is average, and he is not visually exciting.

Elvis rates extremely highly as a performer and singer, plus his early wonderful looks, but he wasn't a great composer or lyricist.

Paul McCartney is a contender, but his compositions and lyrics are uneven, to say the least. (Wings)

Eric Clapton writes, sings and especially plays exceptionally well, but is not much of a performer.

On a Sunday Morning - what about Lou Reed?

He was a great musician, vocalist, lyricist, composer and performer.

Jagger is the most important culturally, because of his strength in all the
mentioned categories plus additional categories like fashion and staging and dance
and conceptual art and media manipulation and fan manipulation and spiritual
enlightenment and emotional health and business success, but all of the artists on
the following poster are greater than Mick in some or at least one of the
categories and so deserve at least honorable mention.

Good post, Rev. I had forgotten Madonna, James Brown, Little Richard, Jimmy Page, Brian Wilson and Chuck Berry.

And 6853, I agree with your method of assessment but not your conclusions - Hendrix is not as good a lyricist and Dylan not as good a singer as you have labeled them.

I considered Mark Knopfler and have often wondered why his star sank because he was so huge in the 80s. Deadly dull performer though.

How do you really tell. It's all subjective.
Elvis
Dylan
McCartney-Lennon
Jagger=Richards
Hendrix
Neil Young
Bruc Springsteen
Michael Jackson
James Brown
David Bowie
Eric Clapton
Pete Thownshend
Chuck Berry
Muddy Waters
Frank Sinatra
Jimmy Page-Plant
Aretha Franklin
Madonna - Only cultually, musically speaking she is not that good. Her voiceis not great. She is a good performer and does compose and has had a huge impact but I have a problem putting her with these others.
Hank Williams
Johnny Cash
Glenn Miller

These are giants in music, How can you really say any of them are better than the others.

On the basis of continual creativity, Bob Dylan.

On the basis of musical exploration, The Kronos Quartet.

It's whoever you like best. It's The Captain and Tennille if your favorite musical artist is The Captain and Tennille.

Early wonderful looks is always high in my criteria for great musical artists.

Dylan falls down on the "performer" category. The guy just didn't move.

Chuck Berry is a monumental figure in music. May be a dick and has not respected his own talent but go back and listen to You Never Can Tell. Unbelievable. Bob Dylan is the greatest artist because he views himself as an artist and he continues to pursue artistic goals. After that, take your pick but greatest living artists include Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lou Reed, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn.

Dylan's compositions aren't that great? Excuse me? And he was a great vocalist. He blew out his voice. I don't think anyone - including the Stones - has matched the haunting beauty of "Visions of Johanna" or the vindictive fury of "Idiot Wind" or the gentle serenity of "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", or countless others I could name. And he is a much better guitar player than given credit for.

An impossible question to answer. It would be better to ask "Who is, in your opinion, really the greatest musical artist?

My answer would probably be Paul McCartney or Michael Jackson.

Sorry to upset the Dylan diehard fans here, but Dylan's musical compositions - not his lyrics - are not exceptionally beautiful, sophisticated or original compared to those of other musicians.

He is an original artist, a poet, and revolutionary for his time, and deserves all credit for that.

I don't think that Beethoven could be classified as an artist. As a composer, yes.
