Early wonderful looks is always high in my criteria for great musical artists.

Dylan falls down on the "performer" category. The guy just didn't move.
Hendrix hated his own singing voice...
Dylan's compositions aren't that great? Excuse me? And he was a great vocalist. He blew out his voice. I don't think anyone - including the Stones - has matched the haunting beauty of "Visions of Johanna" or the vindictive fury of "Idiot Wind" or the gentle serenity of "Tomorrow Is A Long Time", or countless others I could name. And he is a much better guitar player than given credit for.

Sorry to upset the Dylan diehard fans here, but Dylan's musical compositions - not his lyrics - are not exceptionally beautiful, sophisticated or original compared to those of other musicians.
He is an original artist, a poet, and revolutionary for his time, and deserves all credit for that.

It should be someone who ideally excels as a musician, vocalist, lyricist, composer and performer, and whose originality pushed the artistic standards and boundaries of his/her time higher. Obviously, no one is at the top in all those categories, and it's possible to miss out on one category altogether, eg, Elton John is not a lyricist.

Good post, Rev. I had forgotten Madonna, James Brown, Little Richard, Jimmy Page, Brian Wilson and Chuck Berry.
And 6853, I agree with your method of assessment but not your conclusions - Hendrix is not as good a lyricist and Dylan not as good a singer as you have labeled them.
I considered Mark Knopfler and have often wondered why his star sank because he was so huge in the 80s. Deadly dull performer though.

Chuck Berry is a monumental figure in music. May be a dick and has not respected his own talent but go back and listen to You Never Can Tell. Unbelievable. Bob Dylan is the greatest artist because he views himself as an artist and he continues to pursue artistic goals. After that, take your pick but greatest living artists include Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lou Reed, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn.
