You move it to the right, yeah, if it takes all night
Now take it kinda slow with a whole lotta soul
Don't move it too fast, just make it last
You scratch just like a monkey, yeah ya do, real cool
You slide into the limbo, yeah, how low can you go

Now come on, baby, don't fall down on me now
Just move it right here to the Harlem Shuffle
Yeah, yeah, yeah, do the Harlem Shuffle
Yeah, yeah, yeah, do the Harlem Shuffle

Hitch, hitch hike, baby, across the floor, I can't stand it no more, yeah
Now come on, baby, now get into your slide
Just ride, ride, ride, lil' pony ride

Yeah, yeah, yeah, do the Harlem Shuffle
Yeah, yeah, yeah, do the Harlem Shuffle, do the monkey shine
Yeah, yeah, yeah, shake a tail feather, baby
Yeah, yeah, yeah, shake a tail feather, baby
Yeah, yeah, yeah, do the Harlem Shuffle
Yeah, yeah, yeah, do the Harlem Shuffle
Yeah, like your mother told you how
Yeah, yeah, yeah, do the Harlem Shuffle
Do it, do it, do it right on, child
Yeah, yeah, yeah, do the Harlem Shuffle

I think they did a good job on the studio version of the song.
On stage, during the Steel Wheels / Urban Jungle tour.... Well, I don't know. But somehow
I got the feeling the Rolling Stones were lost on a stage among all those horns, keyboards
and background singers during this song. Looking at this video from Japan, I got the
impression Bill is starting to contemplate his future carreer.

They did it because Dancing in the street felt out well for Bowie/Jagger or what do you think?

There have been Keith interviews where he said that he loved
the original Bob & Earl version and over the years would often run
onta cassette comps and give them to Mick hoping he would go for it
and choose to record it with Stones ....... Guess he finally made it thru ...

Never a good sign when the first single from an album is a cover song.

generally, true....but in this case, that rule of thumb was proven faulty when Dirty Work revealed itself to be the masterpiece and heir to Exile that it was and made the MT years seem like a quaint memory, and.....oh, wait...

Great song and very well done by the Stones, wish they would have played it more often.

I hate to be the party-pooper here, but this track is stiff and relatively uninspired, and (to my ears at least) it lacks the magic of the Stones' best work. They're just kind of going through the motions here. Somehow the song just doesn't quite click. And that booming '80s production ..... yeeeoow .... it's awful bad.

Harlem Shuffle is okay, though ... there are certainly worse tracks on DW.

One of their best singles of the 80s, certainly heads and shoulders better than anything on Steel Wheels. This song is a perfect for the stones and when it came out things were looking very very good indeed for Dirty Work based on the strength of this initial track.
Were the stones going to funk, swing, roll and cruise through the 80s? It seemed possible the first time Harlem Shuffle hit the airwaves.... Couple weeks later dirty work would come out and surely that would be a rebound after undercover and then in about a month they'd be announcing the inevitable tour, breaking records all over the world all over again. Right?

Indeed a great cover, but have to say I like the original Bob and Earl version better.

The last great cover from, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Greatest Cover Band in the World, the Rolling Stones!

This is the last time they would take someone else's song and make it their own. It's the old Stones magic of walking a rough song uptown without losing its blackness. Bill is absolutely rubber bass magnificient. It never sounds dated to me like most of the rest of DW. The drums are full throated, the funk is on. Maybe the very last great Stones single. (At least until Doom and Gloom.)

Six years later they did a marvellous rendition of LARS live, which they released as a single though.

Seriously? It was excellent in every way. If there was a weak link it might have been the vocals. But the playing was absolutely wonderful thumbs up

Harlem Shuffle is one of their greatest cover versions ever. The Stones´s genius turned a rather mediocre song into something great. It still blows me away. Too bad, they dont do it live anymore, it worked quite well on stage, imo.

Horrible during the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle tour. Absolutely horrible. It wasnt the Rolling Stones. It was an 80's Rock Orchestra featuring the members from the Rolling Stones.

Compare it to Going to a Go Go from 81/82. The band on fire.

The studioversion is ok though.

I don't think the stones' version of LARS holds a candle to Harlem shuffle as far as listening pleasure. It is hard to compare though. The live version of Harlem shuffle wasn't particularly good. It is funny though even back in 1989 it was almost a surprise to hear them play something off dirty work - even just 3 years after its release it was clear the album was a dog and everyone wanted to forget it.

They were fine, but in my opinion the dirty work version is great!

The Stones version of LARS is a joke. What a lost opportunity. They put no effort into it, like they figure they were entitled to do the song. Probably the worst cover single they released.

That's hilarious. It's performed excellently, with great sound and oozes of inspiration.

Loved it then. Love it now. A very rare, almost lone, gem, from the album.
