On July 16, 1981, he had a heart attack while driving eastbound on the Long Island Expressway, slowed down in fast-moving traffic, and had his car get run over and crushed by an 18-wheeler. I was driving westbound a short time later, on my way to my job at Newsday, and saw the aftermath of an obviously horrible event in the eastbound lanes. When I arrived at work, I found out that Harry Chapin had died there.
