Hang Fire
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Pathé Marconi Studios (EMI Studios), Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, France,
June 10 - October 19, 1979 and Electric Ladyland Studios, New York City,
New York, November - December 1979

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, electric guitar
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Ron Wood - electric guitar, bass, backing vocals
Ian Stewart - piano

In the sweet old country where I come from
Nobody ever works, nothing ever gets done
We hang fire, we hang fire

You know, marrying money is a full time job
I don't need the aggravation, I'm a lazy slob
I hang fire, I hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire, baby, yeah
I hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire, baby, yeah
I hang fire

We've got nothing to eat, we got nowhere to work
Nothing to drink, we just lost our shirts
I'm on the dole, we ain't for hire
Say what the hell, say what the hell, hang fire
Hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire, baby
Hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire, baby

Hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire, baby

Yeah, take a thousand dollars, go and have some fun
Put it all on at a hundred to one
Hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire, baby
Hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire
Hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, hang fire, put it on the wire, baby, put it on the wire

Produced by The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Tattoo You” LP
(Rolling Stones Records COC 16052) US, August 18, 1981

An amazing cross over from Punk to Doo wop.
This was the time that I became a fan. There was nothing in the early 80s that could compare
with this.

And of course, one of the hilarious Tattoo You videos too:

Love it! The guitar sound is fantastic. Keith and Mick at their best.

I like the Hampton version in 1981, very good interweaving, powerful guitars, rough mix, Stones as they should sound.

It's ok. Contrast with the similar sounding 'All Down The Line' from 10 years earlier though, and you hear the sound of band spinning its wheels....

Why are those songs similar again?

melodically similar as well as being a similar tempo. I'd lump Silver Train in with those two as well.....

I'm glad I don't have a musically ear, for me those songs are completely different

Really? I think the Stones even stopped playing Silver Train live as it sounded too much like ADTL. Anyway, just my two cents; don't want to spoil your enjoyment of any of these songs...

Re: Track Talk: Hang Fire

Yeah, they did, but the two songs are certainly not very similar. IMO, Hang Fire is just as similar to ADTL as Where The Boys Go. In other words, not very similar...

the epitome of their punk era sound.

...funny lyrics, mean guitars, 'in-you-face' tempo & sound & attitude...
Kinda like this "Hang Fire".

Very nice song, by that time (SG-ER-TY-UC) RS's music was fresh and strong.

Fantastic song, even better live in '81. Hated the '82 version with the horns though.

82 horns version is better than what would transpire with a chorus background in the current act

weak tune IMO. A little too sappy for me with no edge.

the otherwise fine track is somewhat tarnished by this overexposure, imo.
