I got the same thing Edith, so I put it in a text document and re-copied it from that:

How the Acid King confessed he DID set up Rolling Stones drug bust for MI5 and FBI

By Sharon Churcher and Peter Sheridan

It is one of the most intriguing chapters in the history of the Rolling Stones.

The drugs raid on a party at guitarist Keith Richards’s Sussex home, Redlands, more than 40 years ago very nearly destroyed the band.

And one of the 1967 episode’s unexplained mysteries was the identity of the man blamed by Richards and Mick Jagger for setting them up, a young drug dealer known as the Acid King.

He was a guest at the party – and supplied the drugs – but vanished after the raid, never to be seen or heard of again.

Jagger and Richards were arrested and jailed for possession of cannabis and amphetamines, though later acquitted on appeal.

Richards claimed last week in his autobiography, Life, that the Acid King was a police informant called David Sniderman.

The truth appears to confirm Richards’s long-held belief that the band was targeted by an Establishment fearful of its influence over the nation’s youth.

The Mail on Sunday can reveal that Sniderman was a Toronto-born failed actor who told his family and friends he was recruited by British and American intelligence as part of a plot to discredit the group.

After the Redlands bust, he slipped out of Britain and moved to the States where he changed his name to David Jove, and lived in Hollywood, later working as a

Maggie Abbott, a Sixties talent agent, met him in Los Angeles in 1983 and became his lover. He told her how he infiltrated the group but said he was now ‘on the run’.

She said: ‘David was a heavy drug user but had a quick wit. He was the perfect choice to infiltrate the Stones.

‘He never showed any remorse for what he did. It was all about how he had been “the victim”. He was a totally selfish person.

‘Mick had been my friend as well as a client and I thought about trying to persuade David to come clean publicly.

‘But he was always armed with a handgun and I feared that if I gave him away, he’d shoot me.’

His identity was confirmed by a scion of a family of American philanthropists,
James Weinstock.

Two years after the Redlands raid, ‘Dave Jove’ married Mr Weinstock’s sister, Lotus, in Britain.

‘They’d come up with some new way to make acid and decided to go to the UK and sell it,’ she said.

But David was caught carrying pot by Customs.

‘Some other guys turned up – he implied they were MI5 or MI6 – and they gave him an ultimatum: he’d get out of prison time if he set up the Stones.’

The British agents were in cahoots, he told Miss Abbott, with the FBI’s notorious Counterintelligence division, known as Cointelpro, which specialised in discrediting American groups deemed to be ‘subversive’.

On Christmas Day in 1969, ‘Jove’s’ new wife, Lotus, gave birth to a daughter, Lili. Their marriage lasted 18 years, though they never lived together.

‘I first met David when I returned to California from Bali, where I had gone searching for God,’ said James Weinstock, Lotus’s brother.

‘One New Year’s Eve, he showed me a gun and said he’d just killed a man who was messing with his car.’ Later he was rumoured to have murdered a TV personality, Peter Ivers, the presenter of a TV show that ‘Jove’ produced.

Miss Abbott said: ‘There was talk that Peter had decided to leave the show and David was angry. ‘I discovered “Jove” wasn’t David’s real name when he shot himself through his heel with his gun.

‘When we checked him into hospital, he used a made-up name and later I found out his real name was Sniderman.’

His first half-hearted admission was to Mr Weinstock: ‘He told me he was tight with the Rolling Stones in England, but had a falling-out with them,’ he said.

‘He was arrested for some serious offence, but managed to extricate himself, and he said it all looked very suspicious when the police busted the Rolling Stones. They froze him out after that.’

In 1985, Miss Abbott and an old friend, Marianne Faithfull, went out for dinner in Los Angeles.

Miss Abbott introduced her to ‘Jove’ – but Ms Faithfull soon told her she wanted to leave.

Miss Abbott says: ‘When we got into my car, she said, “It’s him, the Acid King. He set up the Redlands bust. Don’t ever see him again”. ’

Miss Abbott added: ‘Two months after the evening with Marianne, I finally had it out with him.
‘To my amazement, he told me everything. He said, “It’s a relief to be able to talk about it”. ’

‘Jove’s’ final confession was made to his daughter, Lili Haydn, now a 40-year-old rock violinist. She said: ‘Shortly before his death he said he was the Acid King.

‘He told me he wasn’t a drug dealer. He felt he was expanding the consciousness of some of the greatest minds of his day.’

Later in his life he was ostracised by his glamorous LA set after his drug use became ‘voluminous’.

He died alone in 2004.

This article is screwy though. They say after the Redlands bust the King was never seen again, then they have a picture of him and Keith labeled as 1973 (although it does look like it's from around 67, so I guess they just gave the wrong year), And the timeline is all messed up too:

"Two years after the Redlands raid, ‘Dave Jove’ married Mr Weinstock’s sister, Lotus, in Britain.

‘They’d come up with some new way to make acid and decided to go to the UK and sell it,’ she said."

That makes it sound like the King and his wife, who he didn't marry until two years after Redlands got raided, got popped in 1969, and were then offered the deal to set-up the Stones. But Redlands was in 67, obviously. The way they write that is just confusing. Is this typical of the Daily Mail?

Thanks, BT.

I tried copying the article complete with pictures, but it would not post for some reason.

As for the Daily Mail, maybe someone can enlighten us on their credibility.

No problem Edith. Like I said, I had the same problem you did at first, but just in case your curious, after copying the article to text document, I went to save it to make sure it changed formats, and I got some warning about it being in Unicode, and I needed to blah, blah, blah, whatever, or I'd lose it. I just hit save, re-opened it, it was all still there, I copied it, and it posted fine. Apparently there is something about the Daily Mail's format, or at least that page, that IORR's system does not like.

very kind of you, bustedtrousers, but it appears some lines fell out of the article when you were "translating" it from format to format -
"where he changed his name to David Jove, and lived in Hollywood, later working as a Maggie Abbott, a Sixties talent agent", for example
just thought i'd point that out in case you feel like fixing it ... or folks can go read it on the Daily Mail site ...

You only aloud to use the standard ASCII characters on IORR and not the extented ASCII Codes

So probably there was a wrong character in the txt

Try to post "ALT 176" in the preview it will work but when try to post you get this, think BV should change the text below

This is interesting. If it is true - as I believe now - that gives some hard evidence, for example, to Keith's claim of the "establishment" going after them (like he still very much pointed out by the time of Mick receiving his knighthood). I generally tend to think that the 'establishment" trying "get them" was more like a metaphor or a description of the climate. But seemingly there was something actually going on. Taking the evidence we have for the police corruption in the case of Jagger's 1969 raid, and now this, it could be the case that Brian's paranoia - and his two raids - have also some factual base. 'Somebody' was after him. This is what Keith has used to blame for the cause of his death (and that Mick and him were strong enough to fight back, but Brian wasn't).

Philip Norman speculated in his Stones book - the first one I ever read - that the Acid King was just a product of imagination of that "crazy summer" (because he just so suddenly disappeared and no-one heard of him anything since that.) Did Marianne mentioned anything of meeting him in the 80's in either of her autobiographies? It would be odd if she didn't because the Redlands case is so crucial part of her own mythology.

Marianne says in her first book she saw him in LA around the late 1980s and he'd become "quite harebrained".

Why on earth should M15 be interested in the Stones? Hadn't they got a Cold War to run?

On the other hand, it seems reasonable that the FBI wanted to keep them out of the States and there's acceptable evidence that a number of dirty minds and fingers were in cahoots, the News of the World not least among them

Regarding a previous question, the Daily Mail is as fair and honest as any other tabloid - need I say more.

You might have to scrape me off the floor at the end of the tour, but it'll be really good scrapings. - Mick Jagger

Even more interesting is the fact that Lili Haydn is his daughter. Lili plays violin on "Any Way You Look At It" and on WINGLESS ANGELS II.

Keith's talked about this a lot, and it seems he was well informed about who was behind the bust at Redlands. Probably even right about the timing. The cops didn't come until George Harrison had left. One would not like to discredit The Beatles, because they were "nice boys, loved by the establisment".
Ever more weird now that one of them accepted a knighthood...

I did do some editing to take out the text that appears in place of photos when you copy an article like this, so I guess I took out a couple things on accident. That line about Maggie Abbott was right above or below a photo, so that must be what happened. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah, the text document said something about ASCII in the error message it gave before I saved it. Like I said, I just went ahead and hit save despite the warning, re-opened it, and everything was still there. It cut and pasted to here just fine after that.

For more on the bizarre and seedy life of David Jove nee Schneiderman, search Amazon for a copy of "IN HEAVEN EVERYTHING IS FINE - The unsolved Life And Death of Ghost Host Peter Ivers".

Peter Ivers was the host of USA NETWORKS NEW WAVE THEATER back in the early 80s and also wrote the song for ERASERHEAD that the book takes its name from.

David Jove was a producer of the same show. He is rumored to have a part in IVERS' death, which is still unsolved.

The book is well written and researched.

If you had an itch you couldn't scratch for 45 years and a stranger handed you a curved stick with a tiger's paw at one end that answered your prayers, would you say thank you? The David Schneiderman you never knew is alive in "Freedom Spy: David Jove and The Meaning of Existence" by Ed Ochs, former Billboard editor. [www.edochs.com]. The Stones had absolutely no idea who they were inviting to Redlands when they invited Schneiderman/Jove. It's all there, from Redlands to the Hollywood badlands -- he was the '60s.
