Ronnie's shortlived supergroup: Santa Barbara & Machine Head
Date: October 8, 2010 23:55
Reading all the praises for Ronnie's new album and for his fine playing before joining the Stones I remembered his involvement in the extremely shortlived outfit Santa Barbara & Machine Head that only cut three obscure tracks for Immediate Records in 1967 which were released on the blues sampler "Blues Anytime Vol. 3".
My first encounter with these tracks happened when I bought a budget price compilation called "Jeff Beck & Friends" many years ago hoping for some fine Beck guitar lines.
As it turned out I only got one track with Beck jamming with Cyril Davis' All Stars. But instead I got hooked on some cool blues rock instrumentals by this unknown Group with heavy guitar and organ.
It was only much later that I found out it consisted of Ronnie Wood, Jon Lord (of Deep Purple fame) Kim Gardner (The Creation) and Twink (The Pretty Things). Very impressive indead and some fine playing by Ron!
