Gotta Get Away
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, September 6, 1965

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, tambourine
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric guitar

Baby, the truth is out, so don't deny
Baby, to think I believed all your lies
Darlin’, I can't stand to see your face
It's the truth, you understand
I got to get away, got to get away
Gotta, gotta, gotta get away
Got to get away

Baby, I don't want to live here no more
Baby, tho' I tore your pictures off my walls
Darlin’, this old room's falling in on me
You understand the truth now
I got to get away, got to get away
Gotta, gotta, gotta get away
Got to get away

Baby, oh, how could you take away your clothes
Baby, don't screw up this old heart of gold
Darling, this all ruin my social flare
You understand me now
I got to get away, got to get away
Gotta, gotta, gotta get away
Got to get away

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Out Of Our Heads” LP
(Decca SKL 4733) UK, September 24, 1965

Someone should do a track talk on the Singer not the Song where Brian is playing 12 string guitar completely out of tune .. lol

Meh, not a bad little track, but lacking the fire and inspiration of their best stuff. Certainly listenable, but I'd rather spend my time on Beggar's (or their first album for that matter).

not a great track, but the tune does pop into my head now and again... the little domestic details in the lyrics are a sign of increasing writing skill, I think, as opposed to recycling blues lines.

This song is famous for being the only 'Richards-Jagger' - as opposed to Jagger-Richards - number in the Stones' discography. I think I recall Keith being asked about this in an interview, but I don't remember what he said.

Personally I love this song, but I'm highly partial to the entire December's Children album, notwithstanding its many famous problems.

SOunds like a cousin of I'm Free... Good groove, and Jagger sings the hell out of it.

Are you referring to those lead lines? Me think that's a guitar, probably played by Brian.

My songbook - published by Abkco! - says: Darling, this will ruin my social stand.
Bu there are more alternatives: Darling, this old room of mine is all so fair

I don't like this song, but it sounds slightly better at the right speed (2002 Singles Collection as opposed to the 1989 version).

I heard the lyric as "this will ruin my social flair", but whatever it may be.. it has always been one of my favorite pre-beggars track.

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

I think I am, if you mean the lines being imitated here:

I'm often wrong about these things. Also, one of the side-effects of the Stones being a two-guitar outfit is that one of the guitars sometimes plays the kind of parts that might well be done by the bass in a modern band, with one lead guitar + bass only.

Gotta Get Away is very good vintage Stones songs. They used to create songs like this all of the time. Probably took them just a few hours from conception to production. A solid tune and good vocal.

I honestly don't think Jagger-Richards could create a song like this anymore.

They are more into the bloated pop=rock sound of today.

another example of this issue is "Heart of Stone." I have trouble picking out the 2nd (or 3rd?) guitar from the bass on that track. (I suppose it's coming up for Track Talk fairly soon.) For what it's worth, the creator of Green Lady's Youtube link is playing a bass. But I agree with nep that on the cut it's probably a guitar and that the bass is more indistinct. But I couldn't really say whether it's keith or brian.

just in case you actually mean what you're saying, consider that this track was done with the "pop=rock sound of today," when today was 1965.

This track is only held above water by Jaggers singing...some parts of it...

I quite like it, I must say.
It has this naive, punkish flair to it, which makes many early Stones tracks so fascinating - even if they aren't great archievements in terms of songwriting or musicality. It's much more about performance and feel (like always with the Stones).

Classic early Stones! One of my favourite! Mick's vocal is superb.
