Listening to Beggars Banquet today, SCB full blast
song sounds like it belongs to Exile on Main Street.

Mick's rock, I'm roll.

I am not sure I got what you meant.
What make you think that SCB's sound reminds/sounds like the EOMS' album ?

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Its dark feeling, I suppose. Yet, the sound is very different. Great song!

just has a raw quality sound, almost like it was recorded down in the Nellcote basement.

The song is 42 years old (1968) and still has brass balls. Should be played live and replace one of the war horses in concert. A GREAT song from a great era in music.

The 1971 Leeds version is absolutely smokin'.

As good as it is on BB, the Yas Yas version is so much more powerful. The guitars at the end build and crescendo and then the song just grinds to a stop. All that dynamic power with just five guys on stage.

"Stray Cat Blues" is one of my favourite tunes ever - top ten for me, for sure. The original version is the Stones in their rawest, dangerous form ever. When Jagger once said that "we just make noise but we are glad if you call it music" that's the reference I always think of. Jagger's dirtiest voice, and the same goes for Keith's guitar. Maybe the 'balliest' song they ever have recorded. It is also a kind of first cut with which they show that the boys were men now - they were not any longer white kids trying to ape the black blues masters but doing what they determined by their own terms, sounding original. Stunning - unfortunately the song is a bit one-timer - I hope they had made few others with similar bad-ass attitude, but hey - they were hurry to write "Gimme Shelter" - no time to re-cicle ideas then!

The YA-YA'S's one is a wonderful version in its own terms - so professional, tight, smooth blues rock piece. More 'tradiotional' rock band soundalike, and thereby more 'easy-listenable' by today's standards. But it lacks the chaotic, middle finger approach, the feeling of threat and danger of the original that I love so much so I never would rate it to the level of the original. But close.

The problem with the Licks version is that Mick not only is reading from a teleprompter but he's grunting the words in a hurried manner, that clipped 'huhhhh' way he has of "singing" now. At least the guitar section did a rather faithful rendition of certain parts from the original.

Yeah, the guitar section did, but I think that is the problem with the Vegas concept: they just try to recreate the original studio versions and end up sounding far cries. Not like in 1969 when they rearrenged one-year old song to suit to their recent, new sound. But I was surprised how rather well Keith and Ron actually survived in FOUR FLICKS version. They could have done much worse...

Didn't really like the 2002 versions.
But the original BB song and of course the YaYa's live rendition are timeless Stones highlites!
