Just saw it in Fort Collins, amazing. All Down The Line was an unexpected highlight, that song rocks something fierce. Picture and audio were good, although the songs from the "white jumpsuit" show were noticably louder than the others, which was just weird.

Interview beforehand was... I don't know. Mick seemed like he'd just taken some of whatever Keith was taking for the 2007 European shows. Very out of it, I thought. Nice to see him say nice things about Mick Taylor, though.

Saw it alone, at Tinseltown, in Rochester, New York (visiting in-laws eye rolling smiley). I loved it for the most part. The theatre sucked they had the audio off and were playing some classical music over it. Luckily some kid told the manager and got him to start it over. The manager also asked how loud we wanted it, and we got it real good.

The mix was great. Although I was disappointed the surround mix wasn't used. It seems like a few frames were skipped, (about a quarter of a second every now and then) but nothing terrible. The picture was crystal clear, though the coloration seemed slightly off.

The interview was great, I did not know about the L.A. costume shop. It was also nice to have an explanation why 'Rocks Off' isn't in the film, even if it was probably B.S. I wish there was more new footage, but I would still give it a 9/10.

I can't wait to return home. Two months in a different city sucks! I love my wife, but sometimes she's a tad ridiculous.

Just saw it in Seattle, with about 30 people in a large theater.

It was jaw-dropping. The greatest band in the world at their absolute peak!!! Confident, dirty, in perfect sync, totally into their music. No other band could touch them they were so far above and beyond everyone else. And they way the concert just picked up steam as the show went on. Unbelievable.
I and many others were hooting, clapping, dancing . . . . wow! Loved every minute of it.

saw it in vancouver, bc. theater was packed. sound and picture were amazing. really enjoyed it. Keith and Mick were just driving that band. Charlie was shoveling tons of coal into the furnace, too. Bill sounded great and the few glimpses of him playing were pretty fascinating. MT was in fine form, but to be honest, some of his solos had wayyyyy too many notes for me (see Dead Flowers).
I know it's just 100 minutes, or so, from an entire tour, but Keith and Mick were the driving forces of that band in '72. Anybody who thinks they wouldn't have kicked ass without Taylor is deluding themselves.

Great show. Great band. Next up in theaters should be an unreleased show from '78. A few months after the Some Girls Deluxe Decoder Ring Box Set.

Seriously, Mick and Keith could not have been more charismatic, loose and @#$%& brilliant. Awesome flick.

About 12 people in the theater. $12.50 ticket price while all other movies $5.

This might look good on a computer monitor screen. Looked like a good VHS tape to me on the theater screen. Glad I didn't see it on an IMAX screen. The sound wasn't that great, seemed like it was too low also.

I saw this in the 80's and I can't see any real improvement except for a clean picture and the surround seemed better.

I really enjoyed the Stones Shine A Light and At The MAX at the IMAX. Maybe this will be better at home where the sound can be adjusted louder. The interview was interesting - hope they included it on the blu-ray.

Update:

I watched some of this on amazon.com and it looked great. Perhaps only 12 people in the theater and the sound not too loud detracted from my experience as the other two Stones movies were with packed theaters and loud sound. Look forward to getting the blu-ray on the 12th.

Saw it in London last night, cinema less than half full.

It was an amazing film, the power and the impact of the band was incredible. Almost like watching a ballet or other art-form, the Stones seemed like they were from a different time and place (or planet). They swayed and flailed to the music, the driving rhythm went on and on. It felt odd to see the live band so close, felt like you were standing right next to them. The intro was amazing - the build up when you couldn't quite see the Stones yet, then they appeared.

I really enjoyed it - however, the sound disappointed me as it was in MONO!!! Can you believe it? No multi-channel surround, not even stereo. There was a touch of stereo when that weird special effect was heard at the end if the film (motorcycle or plane take off) but no stereo sound during the film itself. It was hard to hear some of MT's solos in the mono sound.

The sound was also very muddy, however this may have been the fault of the cinema sound system. It was also very loud, not a comfortable volume.

I imagine the cacophony of sound is how it may have sounded to the Stones themselves on stage, rather than the clear recordings we used to hearing with live concert.

Anway, glad I went, and I will be buying the dvd also.

Nice to read other reviews - keep 'em coming!

just saw it in evanston, IL - maybe 30 people there. i missed the mick interview at the beginning!

i rocked hardest to ADTL too...Midnight Rambler was great. i was trying to figure out if part of my "Welcome to NY" bootleg was the same show.

i thought it was a little short - only 1.5 hours? i heard we were promised 2 hrs.

(especially this one b... oh wait, that was probably me :E )
the sound wasn't anywhere near loud enough, but it was very very nice to finally see it on a big screen

I saw the beginning of this movie in the '70s with some friends when I was in high school. It was on a midnight art-house double feature with the Yessongs movie, and I like both bands, but the other folks were really only Yes fans and got pretty antsy during the Stones movie. In spite of me trying to stall them, I think by around the end of "Happy" everybody else wanted to take off and I left reluctantly since I needed a ride.
Anyway, I'm glad I finally got to see the entire film, I enjoyed it. I was hoping the theatre would be packed but it was maybe 1/4 full at most.
I saw it by myself this time.

I hear ya, Cindy; baffled at their non-interest, I'll be heading to the movie solo if I feel like battling rush hour traffic. Thank goodness for the fellow crazies at IORR!

You should definitely go, even if you have to go solo! I'm not going by myself, but thought it would be fun to get a little gang, but nope. Next life I'm going to have cool friends!

That's hilarious,Cindy !
reminds me when SAL came out.I saw it 4 times on theaters -1st time with friends & Stones fans ,last time I went alone and found out I was ALONE in the theater.
It was cool because I could jump from seats to seats (the projectionist must have though I was completely crazy :-))

Just saw "LAGTRS" in NYC

Hi. I just saw "Ladies and Gentlemen the Rolling Stones" in New York City, Thursday September 16 2010 @ 7:30 pm at the Chelsea Cinemas on 23rd St.

This is not a review of the tour or the bootleg videos that I have seen of this over the years. I just wanted to dash out a note on the experience.

I got my ticket online -- $20 plus $1 service fee.

I got there at 6:45 and it filled up pretty quickly. There wasn't a seat left by showtime. I'm not sure if it was sold out in advance -- the screening just nine blocks away at Union Square was sold out yesterday. (I like Chelsea better.)

The audience seemed to be largely men in their 50s. There were a few people in their 30s, and two guys who looked about 25.

There was real energy in the room. I started getting really excited. At about 7:15, Fathom Events started playing tunes from the rerelease of Exiles, accompanied by photos of the tour.

Lights out at 7:30. First they showed an interview with Mick. He is so terribly charming. People were laughing hysterically throughout.

He said two things of particular note. First, he said that the movie was owned by someone else and they only bought it back recently. He said that the film and sound had degenerated quite a bit and he was happy with the restoration.

Second, he said that they omitted "Rocks Off" because he doesn't really like the song, that the guitars were out of tune, and it almost didn't make the "Stones in Exile" DVD. (Not sure what he meant -- I may have misunderstood.)

He talked a bit about Mick Taylor, the costumes and makeup, the lighting, and the period. I'm sure this will be on the DVD.

The film started at about 7:50. The opening is SICK. I failed to appreciate it on my home bootlegs. The sound is CRAZY. You WILL feel like you are in the audience. Every word is crystal clear -- I thought people behind me were talking before I realized it was the sound. AMAZING.

You know the rest. I have to add a few things.

There are so many artistic touches that I didn't appreciate as a youth.

There appear to be three cameras. One in the front row -- thus looking up at the band. 2) a telephoto lens that has difficulty keeping Mick in the frame. And one behind the band.

Now that I've seen it proper, I'm not surprised it's remained in the vault so long. As brilliant as the band is, the film is SOOO DARK. The background is BLACK -- not a trace of anything other than the band. It's like they're playing in a tunnel.

It is also irreversibly grainy, something that gets lost on TV. Onscreen, much of it is extremely blurry. Both Gimme Shelter and Midnight Rambler are, I'm sorry, not in focus at all.

The sound is AMAZING. I was just on the edge of my seat for every minute. I heard things I never heard before. Even numbers I haaate (like Tumbling Dice) sound so sharp and resonant.

Mick, as you know, is breathtaking. His skin, his body, his smile, those eyes -- he was just a force of nature. Still. The theater was like being bathed in him. I'm listening to Exiles right now.

The audience applauded wildly after every number. After, the lobby was buzzing with groups of people talking about... everything. Mick Taylor, the tour, the decade, the next tour, "Let's Spend the Night Together," etc. It was like an after party where everyone was drinking Vitamin Water and texting.

I walked home in the rain singing "Rip This Joint." Euphoria.

Oh -- I mostly wanted to report on the experience.

But I hope I also said how fun and amazing it was. I was really blown away and have a new love for the Rolling Stones. They are incredible musicians, performers, and artists. I'm so happy they have done what they can with this film and that I was able to see it.

agree that the crowd was lively--but actually, during the introductions, bill got a notably weak reception. Do non-fans not know who he is?

Saw it in Etobicoke, outside Toronto.

LOVED IT, but the sound was about half of what it should have been. Parts got louder, but the low volume was a serious drag.

I expected a crowd and a long line. We were the first ones -- and we casually walked into an empty theatre an hour before 7. It filled up with maybe 100 people, mostly old farts like me (46).

(Man, Keith is a demon on the last two songs: JJF and SFM!!! ... And LIV kills, as usual.)

Now to get that DVD and crank it at home!

'Here in Indianapolis my fiancee and I saw it w/ what totaled to be less than 20 people.' - one of the reasons I left Indy. Stones wanted to play Market Square Arena in '81, but Disney on Ice wouldn't give up the night! Had ticket to see closed circuit '81 broadcast from Chicago. It was cancelled due to low ticket sales!

L&G: Reporting In From The Great Northwest
Posted by: stonescrow ()
Date: September 17, 2010 10:32

Just returned home after viewing L&G at a theater in North Seattle. Man, where do I begin? How about Awesome, Awesome, Awesome? Seriously, this was well worth the thirty mile round trip (in heavy rain) and $13.50 admission fee despite some volume issues (lack of) during the first part of the actual concert footage.

It appeared to me that the theater was roughly half full. We were told that it seated 150 and that well over 50 tickets had been sold up to about an hour before show time. Mostly gray haired old farts (in their fifties and sixties) like myself with maybe a dozen or so youngsters in their 30's. Actually there may have been as many women in attendance as men, a few of them looked to be possibly in their early seventies.

The interview with Mick went fine, could hear him just fine, lot's of giggling in the audience mainly coming from the females as far as we could tell. The concert began and to be honest with you it was if we were watching it on our home television set. The volume was incredibly low. Noticed lot's of people getting up at different intervals to no doubt complain about the lack of volume. Soon many of us were yelling out in frustration, "crank it up"! My buddy (Jumpin Jeff Flash who had driven over 100 miles to see the movie) then slowly rose from his seat and made his way to the lobby to speak to someone, (anyone) that could solve our problem. He soon returned to his seat confident the problem would soon be solved. At least another ten to fifteen minutes passed before it appeared the volume had been raised at least to a close to acceptable level.

Once the volume problem was sort of corrected (never heard much out of any of the wall mounted side speakers throughout the show) we were able to really get into the magnificent performance taking place on the screen before us. It may have been raw, but raw is good, at least in my book it is. It was the Rolling Stones as I like to hear them, bass driven. Bill Wyman was incredible. I don't know how many times during the show I turned to my friend to comment on how great Bill sounded. Mick Taylor of course was his usual fabulous self and Keith was awesome also. Charlie and Mick (as always) displayed incredible energy and it was nice to see Mick working his magic within a small area on the stage, sort of reminded me of a slimmed down version of Elvis with his moves and the light colored jumpsuit.

At the conclusion of the film the audience gave a nice round of applause and as the credits were being listed and the screen began to darken we heard what sounded to me a lot like an old vintage unlimited hydroplane with an old WWII fighter plane engine (maybe a Rolls Royce Merlin) roaring away from the dock, or was it a Harley? Not sure, but whatever it was, it sounded awesome, almost as awesome as our beloved Stones did on this wonderful evening. Thanks to the Stones for giving us this gem as well as one more memorable night on this remarkable half century journey we have taken with them.

PS: Time for Bill and Mick T to rejoin the band, at least for a mini Euro tour!

An L & G Review - sound still disappointing
Posted by: jjsteve ()
Date: September 17, 2010 11:34

Saw it in LA tonight. While we all know the show itself is an A+, I was disappointed with the sound. I came home and listened to the latest 4 reel bootlegged version and to be honest, the sound in the theatre was only a tad better.. not by much. Even my friend who has never listened to the show before said great show, but sound was flat... just how it was recorded and 38 years of deterioration... but if you are looking for crystal clear, loud guitars with amazing, clear separation, where the guitars jump in your face - like you were at the concert yourself listening to a loud show - keep looking and keep hoping that one day they will release a 72 show with that type of quality - how they are meant to be heard. (maybe they should release the "unreleased" live album.) that is not to say the film was not improved. the picture quality is a little better and some of the guitar parts are a tad better - mick taylor solos are terrific... but still, the sound is flat and muffled in noticeable areas. i loved the show and people clapped and it was truly great.. but the sound was a buzz kill.. this was one of the very first bootlegs i got some 20 years ago when I started collecting.. and with all of the upgrades to this show, I figured that they would finally get it right.. the thing that really puzzles me is that when they rereleased Ya Ya's, the bonus DVD footage was exactly what we wanted - the loud guitars, crystal clear sound - it was perfect.... don't know why they could not get it right with this one... maybe the DVD will be better.

In the cinema I saw it in (London) it was in mono. I understand the 1974 film release had 4-channel sound...however they couldn't even manage stereo in the cinema. The muddy sound was annoying, but would have been ok had it been in stereo, so there was more separation with the instruments. I expect the DVD release will reflect the multi-channel recording.
