Soul Survivor (alternate take)
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Rolling Stones Mobile Recording Unit, Villa Nellcote, Villefranche-sur-mer, France, July 10 - late July & October 14 - November 23, 1971

Hey, hey, hey, I just drown by the time my feet's on the ground

I just can't stand up, no, but this loving cup
I just run around, every time that she walks by

Yeah, I may be a fool, oh, you had my tool
Oh, you know that I do, because

I just can't go by in my big blind eye
And my swollen nose, every time that she walks by

Yeah, yeah, I know you can't stand
Hey, hey, yeah, or just a memory
I got the love, ooh, but I just have enough, but I just can't @#$%& it
Every time that she walks by, every time that she walks by

Yeah, hey, hey I just have to show my loving on your knees

Well, I just can't stand it, well, I just can't have it
I've got two left feet, every time that she walks by

Well, I’m getting up now, well, I just can't @#$%& it
Yeah, well I just can't suck it
Every time that she walks by, every time that she walks by
Hey, hey, yeah, huh, huh, huh
Scratch it, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera

Produced by Jimmy Miller

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Exile On Main Street” 2CD
(Universal 273 429-5) UK, May 14, 2010

What, no comments at all??!!! This is a phenomenal version of one Exile's greatest tracks, and Keith has never sound hipper or more relaxed than he does here. I love those raunchy lyrics, too; sure, they lack the doomsday metaphorical genius of Jagger's version on Exile, but I really dig this portrait of a woman who knocks the stuffing out of Keith, every time that she walks by.

Pure magic.

Soul Survivor Alternate Take

I have listened to the newer songs of Exile on Main Street Remastered, and have concluded that this alternate take of the original Soul Survivor is stupendous. I do not usually like Keith's singing as he often sounds like a bullfrog, but on this song he does a fine job. You can actually understand the words. More than anything else, the guitar riffing is even better than the one from the seventies. He just riffs this one to death. I certainly hope that he sings it at the next concert tour, maybe on the B-stage. I think it really rocks. If this is Keith 2010, then he is ready for the 2011-2012 tour (if there is one).

I rank it right up there close to Plundered My Soul and I'm Not Signifying.

Any comments?

You don't seriously think it was cut in 2010, do you?

But yes, I do enjoy it. If there was any song I'd love Keith to drunkenly slur, Soul Survivor is right up there.

Isn't it the same backing track with different vocals?

It's funny the first time you hear it, but once is probably enough.

Those are not lyrics for a song - it´s Keef improvising in order to have rough idea of the vocal melody for Mick. It´s a rehearsal. It´s silly to thing that guide vocal track (some call it demo vocal track or scratch vocal) would even get to be under a review, it was never inteded to be released in the first place.

The released "orginal" Exile version is the one and the only - this is work in progress, song writing take, and only for die hard fans who want to hear every rehearsal fart they did.

forgot to say that I´m one those die hards who are ready to hear Keith farting at the Exile session...heheh.

I actually wonder if including this one on Exile Deluxe was some kind of "revenge" from Mick ?
Like if Mick is saying "listen....what a poor album even Exile would be, if Keith was in charge, and not me [Jagger]"

a waste of space on the bonus disc.............missed chance....would rather have instrumental versions of LET IT LOOSE , SWEET BLACK ANGEL, and outtakes of SWEET VIRGINIA,ALL DOWN THE LINE, VENTILATOR BLUES..........bla bla bla

This track is worth it just for hearing more of what's going on with the musical track, i.e horns, guitars, etc...

I swear u can hear a ghost track of the original vocals on the chorus'.

... more like Mick showing Keith what he gets for telling him:
"add new vocals to these tracks if you can't help yourself but leave me out of it" :E

Maybe that's the way it went, with Sssoul;
but in either case; I think the inclusion of this song is some kind of "revenge" from sir Jagger, because Keith's singing here sucks. And that's no wonder....he probably can't even remember recording this.

Aaah, another silly Keith bashing, Ok, - One could say that it means: " Listen where most of the ideas come from - Keith - if Keith hadnt given the idea for a song - Mick would still be selling ice cream on the street corner."

How hard is it to understand this is a scratch take...
How did Keith's singing on Happy turn out?

... i'm sure everyone in this thread understands that very well.
Erik_Snow was just wondering how come it wound up being released officially
instead of ... oh for example ... Keith's demo of Rip This Joint, or any of a number of other candidates

i like it, but it's true it's not the most breathtaking Keith-LV demo we've ever heard,
and for sure it wouldn't convince anyone who doesn't already know it that Keith writes mighty fine lyrics

YES - this is stupendous - you're right the guitar is off the charts fantastic! Thanks for pointing this out - I'm usually a bit spent by the time I get to this track - it's good to give it a listen with "fresh ears."smoking smiley
