You are joking right ? One thing I have learned is that most Celebrities could care less about you or anyone else. They do things for themselves not you .
If you didn't have money the Stones or no one else would step foot on a stage. Look at the acts that have cancelled this summer already. Why ? No one is buying tickets to there shitty acts. So they fold the tent and will come back some other time Can theStones sell some tickets ? Yes but I am not so sure cities across the world will fill a stadium to see them anymore. And they won't do it unless they could. There are just to many people out there at this time who don't have expendable cash to shell out to see a band that charges way to much for a ticket. Even a shitty act can't sell tickets today

I don't think celebrities are any different than the rest of us when it comes to looking after their own basic needs first. I would imagine that the Stones are pretty comfortable these days (money wise) and that financial concerns would be somewhat toward the bottom on a list of reasons as to why they would choose to continue on, however, the promoters, venues, vendors, etc. are the ones who's eyes will be glazed over with $ signs at the notion of a possible Stones tour. I do agree with you that a full scale stadium tour would not be in their best interest at this time, or anytime in the future for that matter. I really do think the Stones care about their fans in the sense that throughout every tour they deliver one stunning performance after another, night after night they leave it all on the stage, sometimes to the point of exhaustion, (as witnessed in Shine A Light). In my opinion it is crystal clear that they absolutely love bringing immeasurable joy into the hearts of their audiences. Is there a greater gift of love than the gift of joy? Blessed be the joy givers.

So, if I'm reading this right, its not the Stones who make the big bucks from a tour, but the hangers on, and that the band only do so for the love of performing? Good grief.

Its not 'financial concerns' (ie, a 'need') that motivate them. Its an obsessive desire to accumulate as much wealth as possible.

If money was as irrelevant as you claim, they'd tour more often and demand less money to do so.

The Stones simply will not work unless its within the confines of a lengthy mega tour that grosses hundreds of millions of dollars. They havent played a single public show outside of a huge tour for decades.

i'm not saying i blame them - who wouldn't jump at the chance to make millions every few years when all you really gotta to is trot out and play stuff you can literally play in your sleep - but to think there's any motivation beyond the almighty dollar is just folly....

ok, they get their massive egos stroked, too....so, i stand corrected.

True, which kind of adds to my point, that the desire to outgross everyone else is predominantly ego-motivated rather than the need to simply accrue income for financial reasons.

I dont really blame 'em either to be honest (they dont 'owe' me another note of music or anything) but whilst I'm sure they still very much enjoy playing when the time comes to perform, I think its naive in the extreme for anyone at this stage in the game to suggest that it's the main motivation. If it was, they'd be doing it far more often - whether as a band or separately - and regardless of the amount of revenue it may or may not generate.

Did you not read my response to headly123? He also asked me if I was joking. Please help me understand where you are coming from. So you are a fan of Ronnie Wood and not a fan of Mick, Keith, and Charlie? Maybe I have joined the wrong list? I thought this was a forum for *fans* of the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world? If you feel you are not valued by three of the original members then why are you here? Or if you are not a fan (then again) why bother? Or is it that you just love and respect the music but not the people behind the music, minus one? I joined this list not only because I love and respect the music of the Rolling Stones but also because I actually like these guys. If I felt as you do, that they have never valued or treated their fans well, then I wouldn't waste one minute of my precious time talking about them.

The Rolling Stones are professional musicians and of course (like the rest of us that work, or have worked) they expect to be paid. Of course they are going to be handsomely paid, and deservedly so, however, (at the risk of repeating myself) it is my opinion that money isn't today, (and probably never has been) their primary source of motivation. These guys simply love to perform and the money they make is just frosting on the cake.

There is no doubt that the Stones love doing things in a big way, and why not? They are the greatest show on earth. Whatever you pay, you are going to get your money's worth. If it doesn't fit your budget, then stay home. It's not like you don't have years to save up between tours to get a decent ticket. I saw them at Qwest Field in '06 and paid about $185.00 and it was well worth it. I figure next time around (if there is a next time) to spend around $300.00. Had I saved just $10.00 a month for thirty months, bingo! Of course I could always hold out hope that they might just give a free concert like they did in Rio

Actually, financially, my approach is if it costs more than $45 to see them I'm not going because it's not worth it. I don't care if it is the last time. I will not pay a lot of money to see old men who have lost several steps in the string department fumble their way through a show with a stage that is way out of line in terms of being "needed" poorly playing the same tired songs AGAIN instead of something new.

Mentally my approach is I don't need it, to see them live again. Their legacy as a recording act is still intact, for the most part, and as they say 'the print doesn't change'. It's all about the vaults now. And whatever else. Nostalgia for some people, interest for others, but the past is now their biggest future. The fact that they had to be pushed into doing the Exile thing shows that they are reluctant to give a shit since Mick can't be bothered and Keith can't play anymore (ironically Mick Taylor sounded like it was 1971 again on Plundered, which totally floored me) and, as pointed out in some other place or thread, it's obvious they don't care about their fans because they'd rather milk and bilk people for another round of bland and tepid renditions of Jumpin' Jack Flash, Satisfaction, Honky Tonk Women and Sympathy For The Devil than actually find something interesting to put out.

You really need to get a life and stop focusing (ie happily paying more and more each time) on the stupid 1960s generation still telling you they are the best.

Then again, if it makes you happy, hell, do it. Give them (the Stones) what they want (your money - make sure you buy one of those stupid hippified tie-dyed t-shirts for, what, $50? Probably $100 for this supposed MitchFlorida sponsored tour that's about to happen). It seems to make you happy. You can count 300 ways on not having to battle with me for a ticket.

I would love to believe that they love us, their fans, but I agree with Gazza...if they really loved us, they'd do more shows! If it was about passion, they'd cut prices so more FANS could see them up close!! Here's the billion dollar question: can they really find someone to insure them with Ronnie and Keith being such liabilities?? Ronnie much more than Keith but he did have a terrible accident...and they are such a huge operation with so many sideshows going on...more chances for something to go wrong.
Believe me I want a tour as much as anyone, but I see the difficulties and Mick is practical and conservative when it comes to the possibility of losing money or being sued for breach of contract. And I sure would rather they NOT call it the LAST TOUR!

If they do shorter, scaled down tours with less overheads (which require less corporate sponsorship underwriting them) then it wouldnt be an issue. If there's less money at stake, there's less of an insurance risk. There are plenty of musicians touring who are older and in worse health than any of the Stones - but then theyre not playing football stadiums, using a 300 man crew and performing on stages which cost a couple of million dollars a week to keep on the road.

The bigger the venture, the bigger the risk. Ask the poor saps who were funding the Michael Jackson 02 shows and this summer's U2 tour.

Rocky, I was really trying on this one to make sense of Stonescrow's position. I just saw nothing but, what's the word, blind fandom running rampant. It's one thing to be a fan, it's another to be a blind fan and actually believe such nonsense.

I could never pass for being a Mitch.spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Since I feel a little responsible for setting off this chain reaction let me say something about some of the recent post on this subject . Whoever started this thread is a little naive I think. Nothing personal dude but really ? The Stones really aren't a band anymore. I love these guys but they just can't play anymore. The days are long gone when JUST the rolling Stones were on stage and they would rock your socks off. I have heard other people compare there shows now to a Vegas act and that is probably a little more accurate. But hey someone offered them a S*** load of money and they took it. I can't say that I blame them but hey. there new material while some of it is nice for the most part it is mediocore at best . Look the guys are alomst 70 now. To expect them to carry on is really asking a bit much. As Keith said let's see how far we can tale this. Well it has gone on far enough. I would hate for them to destroy there image and just be the butt of more peoples jokes and llok foolish . One other point that seemed to really hit a sore spot with some people. No Offense but they really don't give a shit about any of us. In the 60's they may have because it seemd like they cared. But when they hit the top and got VERY full of themselves the could have cared less about the fans. They could fill an arena or stadium and get a lot of money doing it. And they did. So don't thinkf or one second that they care on hoot about any of us as individuals . They Don't . They don't know you and don't want to . Sorry if that busts peoples bubble but that is just the way it is.

#1. PASSION: They absolutely love what they do.

#2. HISTORY: It defies logic to think that they would shut things down while at the doorstep to their historic 50th anniversary as a band. There is no way that door doesn't get kicked down!

#3. US: They love their fans! No way they are going to let us down!

#4. PROFESSIONAL PRIDE: Wan't to prove to the world they can still create great music and perform it at a high level.

#5. $: Any tour involving the Stones is a guaranteed money maker.

#6. ADDICTION: They are hopelessly addicted to the big stage! Would only leave kicking and screaming!

#7. DESTINY: Couldn't quit if they wanted to, destiny would not allow it!

stonescrow..Sounds all good to me mate..thats what I like to hear....smoking smiley colonial NZ

headly123,

In my previous reply to you (sent a few days or so ago) I tried to explain in what context I felt the Stones cared for us as fans. I also replied to another member (Bliss, I think) on the list (also several days ago) that I had absolutely *no* expectations of the Stones (or any performer for that matter) beyond them showing up and giving me their very best, (one hundred percent effort). In my opinion that is all any performer owes any fan. We can debate forever on how much the Stones have lost (if anything) as musicians throughout the years, however, two things are undeniable (at least to me and I would bet millions of other Stones fans around the world) and that is their on stage connection (love affair, if you will) with the audience (fans) and their total commitment to giving it their "all" each time out. Now, that is not to say that they haven't had an occasional "off" night over the years, as all performers do, however, rarely, I would wager, for lack of effort. I am now approaching 60 years old and believe me I am not naive enough to think that Mick Jagger is suddenly going to send me a Christmas card because I have been a loyal fan all these years, however, I know that when I go to a Stones concert he sends his love/joy via his magnificent performance. That may not be enough (as in reduced ticket prices, autographs, set list inclusions, perfect musicianship, to many wrinkles, free concerts, access to the Stones bank accounts, etc.) for some fans but it is more than enough for me. I hope I have cleared some things up here in regards to what I meant when I listed US as reason #3 on my list of seven reasons the Stones would continue to roll on.

Sincerely,

Stonescrow (sometimes as thin skinned as Barney Fife, who I think, if you look closely, could be Mick Jagger's real father)

colonial,

Right on the money mate! Time for all of us that call ourselves fans to come together and rally the Stones on for their final victory lap, as mitchflorida calls it! Nothing like a good victory lap to say goodbye.

Rally the Stones? Since when do the Stones need a rally? They're not the U.S. Government putting thousands of people out of jobs. There was a rally in Lafayette, LA the other day for a good cause, not to get the Rolling Stones to do another play-it-by-the-numbers greatest hits tour. Come together and rally for the Stones. The Stones don't need you or anyone else to rally for them - they don't need help or convincing or anything. When they decide they want to make some money they'll go on tour.
