Walking down the street with a sad face, always complaining about the rat race
Nobody said that life was free and easy
Your job, it sucks, it’s on the line, your wife act mean, your kids all cry
I need something that’s guaranteed to please me
But listen, I’ll tell ya, I’m glad to be alive and kicking
I’m glad to hear my heart’s still ticking
So pass me the wine, baby, and let’s make some love, yeah
Sometimes things don’t work out the way you want
I don’t know if I’m gonna laugh or cry

Your friends, they’ll never call you back, you’re feeling such a sad sack
Like some snack that’s gone all cold and greasy, yes
The car you drive a rusty wreck and it’s always you that pays the check
Who said life was warm and peachy
But listen, yeah, I’ll tell ya, I’m glad to be alive and kicking
My blood is up, my pulse is quickening
Pass the wine boy, let’s make some love
Sometimes things don’t work out the way you want
I wonder why, I wonder why, ah yeah
Sometimes mistakes come back to haunt you, baby
And I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, yeah

Yeah, come on, yeah, I got to be alive and kicking, glad to be alive and kicking
I’m glad to have a pot to piss in, glad to be alive and kicking
You got to be alive and kicking, got to be, yeah, come on, got to be, yeah…

Got to be alive and kicking, good to be alive and kicking
Glad to see the plot is thickening, pass the wine, let’s make some love
Let’s make some love, let’s make some love, let’s make some love

Produced by Jimmy Miller, Don Was & The Glimmer Twins

First released on:

One of the most convincing tracks on that bonus-CD. Great rhythm and feel. Don't care which parts are original and which have been added. It works just fine (which is not the case on all of these tracks).

the Mick sounds more relaxed than on the other tracks with new vocals, and that's great to hear.
cool beat and pretty guitar as well - i'll take it! i'll take two :E

Great track!

Sounds more Goat´s Head Soup-ish than Exile-ish to me, though...

Laid back and funky. Nice groove, songwriting is so so, but I like the song.

songwriting's great - genuine Stones lyrics.
it's all about being alive, kicking and passing the wine.

it's the Stones rewriting Quintus Horatius Flaccus, that's what those damn dinosaurs do best. it's not about 1792 tour now, it's the Stones from before Christ. ;^)

I'm sorry. I never did like it. It may grow on me over time though. It just doesn't sound Stonesy enough.I would give it a 3 out of a possible 10.

We haven't got an original outtake track or any kind of alternate version to compare this with, so we can only guess what's been done to Sophia Loren to dress her up and make her presentable. Maybe that's why this one sounds so laid-back and unforced - at least it does to me. This is a song that strolls along like someone walking down the street in the sunshine, and the music fits the spirit of the lyrics. It's fun listening to Mick telling all the Grumpy Old Men of this world to quit whining and enjoy life once in a while....

Awesome track that swings and sways ... fantastic rhythm, great lyrics. Best bonus track from the re-release, IMO. Great harp, too, and on this one the horns really add color and vibrancy.

Lurv it.

I was very surprised when I heard this tune. The Stones obviously liked it so much that they basically recorded it again only as Save Me!

Very funky. Very strange they didn't finish it and put it on the album.

So, what's the Sophia Loren reference?

Just a working title for a backing track with no lyrics.

Nice, War-esque groove. I like it, but Mick's new vocal veer too often into "Goddess" territory with over-enunciation.

I don't think I'm stepping on Rene's toes here, as I don't think this song will come up on his list for some time, if at all.

I've noticed a sort of ambivalence on this forum towards this song from the Exile outtakes. I've really been digging it lately. It's my second favorite 'new' track after Plundered My Soul. It's got a unique groove and I thought Jagger came up with some great lyrics and harmonica for it.

Is the problem some people have with it is that the track was known in bootleg circles and they liked that version better?

I love "Pass the Wine." It's actually my favorite of the six "new" tracks. "Sophia Loren" never circulated among bootleggers, it was just listed in session logs as a known EXILE outtake.

I suspect that without Mick Taylor's lead guitar overdub there wouldn't have been such a tremendous outpouring of love for "Plundered My Soul." I'm sure it would have been well-liked enough but that's it. The belief that Taylor's overdub recaptured the magic that was missing for decades and that it was now conceivable that Mick Taylor would rejoin the band largely fueled the praise that particular song received.

I respectly disagree here. I think Taylor's guitar ices the cake nicely but I think the true magic lies under it. The groove of the rhyhmn section - Cha-Bill-Keef-Nicky - each instrument cooked so nicely - and Jagger's vocals rigorously thought through and performed - pronouncing each line with a purpose - just like good ol' times. It is the wholeness of the song that makes the 'trick' for me - each instrument is mixed so delicously to the soap, to change a cooking metaphor. How come it taste so good! thumbs up

I think with "Pass The Wine" the cooking does not right hit the goal. Can't really say now exactly why or how. I need to listen it more (I hadn't for a while). It deserves that. As a track I find it much intersting than any of their racent 'new' stuff.
