The correct answer is B.

B & C

B & C

Gimme Shelter and C Sucker Blues were documentaries about an entire band NOT just Mick Jagger. I really can't judge A since it's been way too long ago since I've even seen clips. Shine a Light put WAY too much emphasis on Mick. It's a good movie don't get me wrong but Scorsese did a much better job with his "Blues" documentary.

The Maysles brothers made one of the best films--period--ever.

Rollin Binzer is credited as director of "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Rolling Stones" and that's the best Stones film, in my opinion.

Maysles
And Binzer

LSTNT would have been great, but I am not a fan of the 81 tour. Too bright for my Stones...I like 'em dark!

Maysles.

L&G captures the band in great form, but I think as a film, its a bit overrated (like SAL its also a bit too concentrated on one person for my liking)

LSTNT is visually stunning (that opening aerial shot of Sun Devil Stadium was worth the admission price alone) and a better concert film than L&G overall, although its not as great performance wise and, most annoyingly, there are far too many songs edited so that they can cram 130 minutes worth of concert footage into a 90 minute film.

One Plus One is mostly unwatchable, and Cócksucker Blues just isnt THAT interesting. The fact that so much of it is obviously staged detracts from the supposed documentary aspect of it.

Michael Lindsay-Hogg should have been listed here for RnR Circus. Fine movie.

Scorsese blew the chance to make a great Stones movie IMO.

How many film students do we have here? On artstic merits alone, which Stones movie deserves your version of the Oscar? I liked "Gimme Shelter", as parts of it made one feel uncomfortable in the role of a fan. It is more of a social commentary than a music film, and it provokes critical thought.

Certainly not Hal Ashby. It could have been Scorcese - had they let him. Of course, the answer is B.

Some good observations and mostly agreement that the Maysles Bros are the winners.
Here's some ommisions that Gazza points out:

( F )
ROLLIN BINZER
Director of “Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones.”

( G )
Michael Lindsay-Hogg
Director of " Rolling Stones Rock n Roll Circus"

Hal Ashby filmed Hampton 81, right? that'll do me just fine.
not only is it a glorious document of the show that has everything and then some -
the cat really *gets* it, and shows how each of the bandmembers shine.

>> Gimme Shelter .. [was] ... about an entire band NOT just Mick Jagger. <<

ohh man - i totally disagree! especially in the concert segments, the Maysles brothers' fixation with Mick makes me want to slap them.
and Robert Frank seemed to have a lot more affinity for the hangers-on than for the musicians.
as noted by my esteemed colleagues, Scorsese blew it.

updated after the more alert additions below: Peter Whitehead takes 1.5th place, and Lindsay-Hogg comes in 2nd.

1 = B
2 = C
3 = A (If like me you only save the STONES part on a another DVD)winking smiley

As we used to say in FRANCE about GODARD :
"Soit c'est un chef d'Oeuvre Soit c'est une merde" which mean that his movies
could have been considered as well as a masterpiece or a s@#^ !

I would say B & D .

GS is an analysis of a "freak-out" that happened in front of a camera .The cameras from Mayles brothers seem to have be omnipresent .It's an "objective" movie .

Hal Ashby made a good job too.

And I just can't stand Godard and even more the "back voice silly and pretentious comments " in One + One .

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Can i throw in "Charlie is My Darling" directed by Peter Whitehead. Still my favourite Stones "film". A fairly realistic portrait of life on the road which is charming, funny and naive in places. Stones before all of the hype took over

Just beat me to it Nashville. None of the others. It's Peter Whitehead's amazing work with the band c.65-67 and his masterpiece Charlie Is My Darling. No one else has captured the band so relaxed and offguard ever again.

Gimme Shelter,L&G and Hampton ´81.

Gazza´s description of the opening scenes with Under My Thumb of LSTNT is absolutely fine,I always
feel like ( and sometimes ) do some jumping watching it...

But I like as well scenes and songs from the others mentioned.

The only one I think is crap is Live At The Max,but I mentioned that before.

So Julian Temple unfortunately is last...

Think of it as an update of "25 x 5" (several of the same clips are used).

Almost three hours long. Was only ever televised on ARTE (a joint French/German satellite channel) on 14.7.02 so all the broadcast versions have French or German translations overdubbed, but there is an unbroadcast English cut of it.

Best Stones documentary EVER.
