Fortune Teller
(Allen Toussaint)

Decca Studios, West Hampstead, London, UK, July 9, 1963

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, tambourine
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - harmonica, backing vocals

Went to the fortune teller, had my fortune read
I didn't know what to tell her, I had a dizzy feeling in my head
Then she took a look at my palm, she said: Son, you feel kinda warm
She looked into her crystal ball and said: You're in love
I said that could not be so, I’m not passionate with the girls I know
She said: When the next one arrives, you’ll be looking into her eyes

I left there in a hurry, I’m looking forward to my big surprise
The next day I discovered that the fortune teller told me a lie
I hurried back down to that woman as mad as I could be
I told her I didn't see nobody, why'd she make a fool out of me
Then something struck me as if it came from up above
While looking at the fortune teller I fell in love

Now I'm a happy fellow, well, I'm married to the fortune teller
We're happy as we can be, now I get my fortune told for free

Now I'm a happy fellow, well, I'm married to the fortune teller
We're happy as we can be and now I get my fortune told for free

Produced by Michael Barclay

First released on:
Various Artists - “Saturday Club” LP
(Decca LK 4583) UK, January 25, 1964

It's on the album 'Got Live if you Want It' but despite the title it is the studio recording with added screams.

Not one of their best early recordings, but still enjoyable!

It´s on More Hot Rocks - although see Aeppli 1963 0.008 for alternate mixes...[aeppli.ch]

I think it was released on a 'Saturday Club' compliation here in the UK alongside the non-EP version of 'Posion Ivy'

This is a song that I heard around 1975 for the first time. Could have been on 'No Stone Unturned' and it's a great track from my favorite band...

This is a great early cover...I think it was supposed to be the b-side of their second single, b/w Poison Ivy, and for some reason never released.

Rumours that there is actual unreleased vinyl of this floating around for big $$'s

Great early Stones. Love the guitars.

It's so very lonely, you're 2,000 Light Years from home

Yes and yes. Copies were pressed and given to radio DJ's, apparently. I did read in a Record Collector book that a mint copy would be worth £400. This was about 10 years ago, so the value must be quite high now.

Mediocre cover of a great song.

Who's idea was it to add the fake crowd screams?

Here's a MUCH better version, IMO.

Help with "Fortune Teller" versions please
Posted by: Kingbeebuzz ()

I am organising my digital Stones collection into chronological recording sessions and would welcome some help with the track "Fortune Teller".

Nico Zentgraf lists 2 versions of Fortune Teller both recorded on 09/07/1963;
Fortune Teller 1 (with repeated last verse and a harmonica)
Fortune Teller 2 (with single last verse and no harmonica)

Version 1 was released in 1964 on the Saturday Club LP and again in 1972 on More Hot Rocks LP.

Version 2 was released with over dubbed audience sound in 1966 on Got Live If You Want It LP.

So far so good..........BUT.......

Martin Elliot lists 3 versions, also all recorded on 09/07/1963 (and Martin gives track length);
Fortune Teller 1 (2.18) (Saturday Club LP and More Hot Rocks version which on his album lists is (2.16))
Fortune Teller (alt ver) (2.06)
Fortune Teller 2 (1.56) (1996 GLIYWI version)

So......my questions are ;

Is Nico correct (there are only 2 versions) ?

Is Martin correct (there are 3 versions) ?

If Martin is correct.......where can I find the alternate version (length 2.06)

Many thanks

Maybe this helps: "July 9 and around July 18, 1963 · Decca Studios, London" - [Aeppli.ch] and "0.010 August 26, 1963 · Single, Decca F11742 (UK, immediately withdrawn)" - [Aeppli.ch] , [Discogs.com] , [45cat.com] .

See also [www.dbboots.com] for 'Fortune Teller'.

If this can help, I have an acetate with Poison Ivy versions 2 and 3 plus a Fortune Teller dated 14.9.1963 and from DECCA West Hampstead Studios.
According to my info, that day the group was not in London: it might be the date that ALO and Eric Easton re-work/ post-produced the song.
The side of the acetate with FT reads Andrew+Eric engraved.

Thank you to everyone for the info.

It is now clear that on 9th July 1963 the Stones recorded only 2 versions of Fortune Teller ( a 2.16 take and a 1.56 take).

Both of these had audience overdubs added in 1966.

However...............the original question still stands......Martin Elliott lists 3 takes on 9th July 1963.......what is the 2.06 take ? or has Martin added this take mistakenly and it is actually an audience overdub version ?

My guess is that there are only 2 original tracks from 9th July 1963 takes.

Maybe the 2:06 take could be this one: "Alternate version (recorded live at Kingsway Studios in 1963)" - [www.dbboots.com] . It can be found in the StonesVault - [iorr.org] . But the info on that bootleg could be wrong.

You could also try to contact Martin Elliott - [StonesSessions.com] .
