Rolling Stones deny latest Australian claims that Charlie Watts is quitting

Drummer's future subject to new speculation from down under

The Rolling Stones have denied that Charlie Watts is leaving the band, after his future was called into question by reports emanating from Australia.

It is the second time in around eight months that drummer's membership of the band has been called into question by Australian sources.

Last year it was claimed that the sticksman was quitting touring with the band, but Watts was quick to issue a denial.

This time a similar claim was reported by the Healrdsun.com.au, who say sources in the band's camp suggested to them that Watts will be replaced by "US drummer Steve Jordan" as "Charlie Watts has vowed to quit world touring".

However this morning (May 24) The Rolling Stones issued a statement denying the latest claims.

"Contrary to a fabricated and ill informed report that appeared yesterday on a small music website in Australia, we would like to make it clear that drummer Charlie Watts has not left The Rolling Stones," a spokesperson explained.

"Charlie is currently being interviewed by the media promoting their latest project - the release of the album 'Exile on Main Street' and the forthcoming film Stones In Exile, released on DVD next month.’’

The spokesperson added that Watts will be with his bandmates later today "celebrating with the rest of the Stones… as the 'Exile' album is Number One in the UK charts".

The Rolling Stones' re-release of 'Exile On Mainstreet' topped the UK Albums chart yesterday (May 23).

I hereby suggest to Mr. Paul Cashmere - who can probably no longer live with the shame of having employed the Stones' info officer twice - in 8 months - sending out press releases denying his articles in that "small australian music site" - Paul - burn that wig, get a sex- and a career change!
Reporters can't get away with what you just tried to. So, gardening, perhaps? Snaketaming?

Charlie Watts Is Out Of The Stones Story Resurfaces

by Paul Cashmere - May 23 2010

When I wrote the story that Charlie Watts had left The Rolling Stones back in September 2009 it sent shockwaves across the world. Stones fans everywhere went into denial. Stones spokesperson Fran Curtis childishly reverted to calling us names.

It is becoming more apparent that Charlie Watts is no longer a touring member of the band.

Today in the Herald Sun, respected music journalist Nui Te Koha backed up the original Undercover story
stating “US drummer Steve Jordan will stand in for Charlie Watts, who has vowed to quit world touring” on the band’s next tour”.....

I have to say that this doesn't sound like a man who has quit touring or anything else...

Yes, that Cashmere's looking more like Shropshire sheep now. Shaun the Sheep's got more credibility than that man...

It also says, what Charlie says, that nothing is planned right now. Charlie doesn't need to quit something that's not happening! They could at least have fun with it -

"Charlie Watts (as has Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ron Wood) has quit The Rolling Stones and touring with them by default - they haven't done anything for almost 3 years now nor are there any plans set for any future work at the moment."

remember that? a lot of people here took that story seriously for *ages*,
even insisting (after the rearrangement of the 06 tour) that the Stones wouldn't tour in 07

Charlie Watts Not Leaving Rolling Stones
Tabloid rumours denied

by Robin Murray Tue, 25/05/2010

Rock icons The Rolling Stones have issued a furious denial after reports claimed that Charlie Watts was leaving the band.

The Rolling Stones are now an institution. Officially the world's most popular touring band, their enormous 2005 jaunt 'A Bigger Bang' spawned record breaking box office receipts and an award winning concert film.

Re-issuing their legendary album 'Exile On Main Street' the band delighted fans by including previously unreleased material.

Sweeping into the British charts at number one, The Rolling Stones seemed on top of the world. However reports in Australia suggested that drummer Charlie Watts was set to leave the group's touring line up.

Apparently believing he was too old, the drummer had offered to remain in the group as a studio only musician.

However in a new statement The Rolling Stones have rubbished these claims.

In fact, one of the interviews Charlie Watts did by way of promoting 'Exile On Main Street' was with ClashMusic! Speaking about the making of the album, his love of jazz and much, much more.

Charlie Watts is now apparently "celebrating with the rest of the Stones… as the 'Exile' album is Number One in the UK charts".

I can't believe this story keeps coming up. They've said it isn't true, but it keeps on appearing anyway.

Besides, hasn't he threatened to quit after every tour since 1972?

There is no Stones without Charlie. If they tour without him they might as well bill it "The Jagger-Richards Band" cause thats all it will be.

Timeisonourside.com, just after July 26 1972.

"Charlie: I got off the plane in '72 and said No fcking more because I don't actually like touring and I don't like living out of suitcases. I hate being away from home. I always do tours thinking they're the last one, and at the end of them I always leave the band."
