The Exile Deluxe Lyrics
Posted by: Green Lady ()
Date: May 21, 2010 01:25

Seems like a good idea to put all the ones we've done so far in one thread together:

Pass the Wine (Sophia Loren)
(Green Lady & Rockman)

Walking down the street with a sad face
Always complaining ‘bout the rat race
Nobody said that life was free and easy
Your job it sucks, it’s on the line
Your wife act mean, your kids all cry
I need something that’s guaranteed to please me – but listen – i’ll tell ya -
I’m glad to be alive and kicking
I’m glad to hear my heart’s still ticking
Pass me the wine, baby, and let’s make some love!

Sometimes things don’t work out the way you want
I don’t know
If I’m gonna laugh or cry

Your friends’ll never call you back
You’re feeling such a sad sack
Like some snack that’s gone all cold and greasy
The car you drive a rusty wreck
It’s always you that pays the check
Who said life was warm and peachy? – but listen – yeah, I’ll tell ya –
I’m glad to be alive and kicking
My blood is up, my pulse is quick
Pass the wine, boy – let’s make some love!

Sometimes things don’t work out the way you want
I wonder why – I wonder why
Sometimes mistakes come back to haunt you, babe
I don’t know
Whether to laugh or cry

I’m glad to be alive and kicking
Glad to be alive and kicking
I’m glad to have a pot to piss in
Glad to be alive and kicking

You got to be alive and kicking

Got to be alive and kicking
Good to be alive and kicking
Glad to see the plot is thickening

Pass the wine – let’s make some love
Let’s make some love
Let’s make some love
Let’s make some love...

Plundered My Soul
(A joint effort by lots of people)

Can you believe it
I won no medals
in this love game

I've been resting on my laurels
I'm a bad loser
I'm a yard off my pace

I smelled rubber
and I soon discovered
that you'd gone for good

My indiscretions made a bad impression
guess I was misunderstood

I thought you needed my lovin'
but its my heart that you stole

I thought you wanted my money
but you plundered my soul

I started asking around
but your friends' pretty lips were sealed

I wrote a letter
full of trite confessions about wounds that heal

I heard some gossip you'd become an alcoholic
and were drying out

so I phoned every clinic in the yellow pages
not a trace about!

I thought you needed my lovin'
but its my heart that you stole

I thought you wanted my money
but you plundered my soul

I ain't quitting
but I'm close to admitting
I'm a sorry case

but on quiet reflection
my sad rejection's not a total disgrace

but I do miss your quick repartee
and the smile and the looks on your face

you'll be a tough act to follow
a bitter pill to swallow
you'll be tough to replace

I thought you wanted my lovin'
but its my heart that you stole

you were a trick up my sleeve
my ace in the hole

I thought you wanted my money
but you plundered my soul

Following The River
(Bitches Brew)

There's something I should tell you
Why don't you sit there in that chair
You're looking good today
I love the way your comb's tucked in your hair

My cards are on the table
but the drinks have all run out
There's been some other lads in this room with me
we're really quite a crowd
It's hard to break it gently
but I really thought it through
I don't think there's much future left
for me and you, me and you

I've been following the river
til it joins hands with the sea.
I've been thinking of you so bad
Cause you always saw the best in me

You'll probably forget me
and I'll fade back in the fog
Just a face disappearing without trace
I'll be lost, I'll be lost

One day I'll hear some laughter in a out-of-town cafe
I'll be reaching for your number
I'll be calling out your name
calling out your name

I've been following that river
gonna join hands with the sea
I've been thinking of ya all the time
Cause you always brought the best in me
I'll be following the river - oh my!
Till it spills out in the sea

When I first think about ya oh dear
Cause you always brought the best in me
(always brought the best in me)
I'll be following the river (yeah!)
Gonna join hands with the sea

Ah if I can't have ya
I'll be dreaming all about ya
Cause you always brought the best in me
I'll be following the river
gonna join hands with the sea

I'll be thinking about ya
cause you always brought the best in me

So Divine
(twenny revlights & Rocky Dijon)

You think you got me in your chains
Control me with your devious plans
You think your love is so divine
You pour it out like it was heaven-scented wine

You think your love is all I crave
Well I got better things to do than be your slave

When you first asked me in
I heard those violins
You quickly pulled the pin
You had no hesitation

There is a rose that bears your name
The bloom's short-lived, its such a shame

You think your love is so divine
You think I'll drink it like it was heaven-scented wine
You think your love is all I crave
You say I'll worship you till I'm in my grave

So when love passed the ball
You play winner takes it all
Act like its a carnival
Some mad conflagration

I’m like a two-way street
You live to lolly-g
I'm voting with my feet
Who needs this aggravation?

I'm headed for the door
Never see you anymore
I'll be on some distant shore
Way out of circulation

No tears will pass my eye
No memory will make me cry
So long, adios, goodbye
I'm off your reservation

Aaah, yeah..
You think your love is so divine
Think you're the savior of mankind
You say your love is like love potion number nine

You say your love is all I crave
And I'm the dog whose had its day
So sad to rain on your parade
But I got better things to do than be your slave

Anybody got any others?

Won't you be my baby for a while?

All down the line
Oh hear the women sayin yeah
Won't you feel my leg?
Water down the sidewalk yeah yeah
Got to be the sidewalk yeah
Causing all the trouble

I'll take a shot at another one, though I'm sure there'll be some corrections:

(now incorporating Green Lady's, Rockman's, and CindyC's input)

I'm sitting in the darkness
You're dancing in the light
You really hit the big time
I really took a dive

I'm running in the rain
You're dancing in the light
I'm waiting for the train
That never will arrive

You left me twisting in the wind
Dangling in the night
You'll be Mr. Christian
And I'll be Captain Bligh

Look at you with your face all shining
Got some new work and some realigning
Now that your nose got some redefining
You look like a million bucks

I got a sneaking feeling
You and your wheeling dealing
I'm gonna hit the ceiling
Bang the ground with a bump

My whole world is crashing
I took a violent thrashing
Suffered a total trashing
I'm in the garbage dump

What'd I ever do
To treat me so bad
You're living in the penthouse
My flat is dark and damp

Yeah what's the matter, baby?
We used to be so tight
I'm living in the gloom
While you're dancing in the light

I got that sinking feeling
Whose potatoes are you peeling?
Can't you hear my poor heart's squealing?
I'm in the garbage dump

You're lying in the sunshine
I'm waving in the crowd
You're basking in the spotlight
I'm lost and never found

What am I gonna do about ya?
What am I gonna do?

I don't have a clue without you
What am I gonna do?

I'm in a dark place, baby
I got to wear a grim face, baby
You left me with a heartache
Get me out of the darkness
What am I gonna do without you?
What am I gonna do?

If I was your a new boyfriend
I would have stage fright
While you're riding in a limo
I'm wheeling my bike

What am I gonna do without ya?
What am I gonna do?

May I assume, Rockman, that your source is the japanese edition?

very helpful, but they got a few things wrong, most notably the Mr.
Christian/Captain Blye line.

The Japanese sheet did get "Look at you with your face all shining" correct (though at first I thought it was "shiny").

Later, I think it's something like:

You're lying in the sunshine
I'm _______________ in a cloud
You're basking in the spotlight
I'll be off ______________ in a crowd

***

Also some of the new lyrics seem to deliberately echo parts of Exile. The whole "What am I gonna do without you?" here reminds me of Ventilator Blues's "What you gonna do about it?"

You left me twisting in the wind
Dangling the knife (dangling in the night)
You'll be Mr. Christian
And I'll be Captain Blye

You left the gym with your face all shining (Look at you with your face all shining)
Got some new work and some realigning

I got a sneaking feeling (sinking)
You and your wheeling dealing

My whole world is crashing
I took a violent thrashing
Suffered a total trashing (yours make more sense, but I hear this as "something to throw the trash in")
I'm in the garbage dump

You're living in the penthouse (... living in "a" penthouse, not "the")
My flat is dark and damp

Yeah what's the matter, baby?
We used to be so tight

I got that sinking feeling
Whose potatoes are you peeling?
Can't you hear my poor heart's squealing?

You're lying in the sunshine
I'm waving in the crowd (not sure WTF he's saying, but it sounds like clouds)
You're basking in the spotlight

Nice job twenny!

>>> Nice job twenny!

Thanks Cindy, and thanks for your input, some of which I've now incorporated
above. Not that we'll ever reach closure on this, because Mick for example
is perfectly capable of writing "You'll be the Christian, I'll be the captive
lion" and then on the spur of moment singing instead "You'll be Mr.
Christian, I'll be Captain Blye", either of which works just fine within
the context of the song...

I don't know about anybody else, but personally, working to get the words
actually takes me much deeper into the music, and makes the music play
in my memory that much clearer. Just like with the original Exile
way back when...

Also, and again its probably just me, now that we've got most of the words
to the new songs, the bonus disk is kinda like what some wag wrote last
week, "Exile on Wall Street", in that the images of romantic suffering
and economic suffering are interwoven in almost every one of the new
songs.

The guitar that comes in right after he says "garbage dump" is my favorite part of the song. Is that a Mick Taylor bit?

Re: The Exile Deluxe Lyrics

>> The guitar that comes in right after he says "garbage dump" is my favorite

There are people on this board much more qualified to answer that question
than me, but to my ears both guitars sound like Keith. If it is Taylor,
then its the Taylor that I most wish never went away: the one that knew
how to play like Keith when that's what the song called for. By 1973 that
Taylor was just a memory (and he used to mean so much to me).

Switching gears, I want to point out something that probably nobody but me will
find interesting, from "So Divine":

"There is a rose that bears your name
The bloom's short-lived, its such a shame"

I think the rose referenced here is the "Ausonius rose" named after the
Roman poet Decimus Magnus Ausonius who wrote "O maid, while youth is with
the rose and thee, Pluck thou the rose: life is as swift for thee."

And that's very much in keeping with the song's theme of a young woman
who has nothing to offer but her youthful beauty...

Incidentally, Decimus Magnus Ausonius also wrote a poem entitled
"Elysian Fields".

nota bene: the interpretations from the Japanese booklet can't be taken too literally -
someone did try, obviously, but they're not 100% accurate

"I'm not signifying" lyrics seem weird and nobody hears the same thing

When I'm looking out my window, baby (Ian McPherson & Keno) seems correct
And I'm looking out my window (japanese)
and staring by my door (Ian McPherson)
And I'm standing by my door (Keno & japanese)) seems correct

When you're riding motorcycle, baby seems correct
In your graveyard world (Ian McPherson & Keno) what does it mean?
When you're riding board a cycle, baby
When you break your heart whirl (japanese)

Honey, I've been lying
Honey, I've been jiving
Honey, I've been signifying (Ian McPherson & Keno)

Honey, I ain't lying
Honey, I ain't Jiving
Honey, I ain't signifying (Japanese) seems correct

When you're lyring on the ceiling, baby (Ian McPherson & Keno) lyring???
And I'm gazing on your floor (Keno)
And gazing on your floor (Ian McPherson) seems correct
Ain't no light on to see me, baby
And there isn't anyone home (Japanese)

What do you think?

Re: The Exile Deluxe Lyrics

Here's "I Ain't Lying" (thanks kleermaker). I have this on a bootleg collection called Let It Bleed Sessions, but it's another I'm Not Signifying. The lyrics are a bit different though.

For instance, in this version that seems to be a UNICYCLE that baby is riding, not a motorcycle (though God only knows what the next line is - it sounds like "in your something world" in both versions, but the somethings are different!)

Having listened to both, I'm more of the opinion that the new version's lyrics are not original, but Mick doing his best to sound like 1971 or whenever.

Does anyone have an opinion whether all the piano is original or has some been added (possibly to cover a fade-in intro like I Ain't Lying's?) and if so who it is?
