So Divine: old and new vocals
Posted by: Greg ()

So after hearing Don Was say that So Divine is a combination of new and all vocals (and tactically 'forgetting' which ones are new, in this interview [www.npr.org]), I listened to the song with new ears. It’s funny how upon hearing the opening verses you automatically assume all vocals are new, but now I'm convinced the choruses are sung by the young Mick, at Stargroves in 1970. They have a sixties, almost Between The Buttonish sound to them. I put them in bold face.

Thanks to twenny revlights and Rocky Dijon for figuring out the lyrics (some small adjustments made).

You think you got me in your chains
Control me with your devious plans
You think your love is so divine
You pour it out like it was heaven-scented wine

You think your love is all I crave
Well I got better things to do than be your slave

When you first asked me in
I heard those violins
You quickly pulled the pin
You had no hesitation

There is a rose that bears your name
The bloom's short-lived, its such a shame

You think your love is so divine
You think I'll drink it like it was heaven-scented wine
You think your love is all I crave
You say I'll worship you till I'm in my grave

So when love passed the ball
You play winner takes it all
Act like its a carnival
Some mad conflagration

I’m like a two-way street
You live to lolly-g
I'm voting with my feet
Who needs this aggravation?

I'm headed for the door
Never see you anymore
I'll be on some distant shore
Way out of circulation

No tears will pass my eye
No memory will make me cry
So long, adios, goodbye
I'm off your reservation

Aaah, yeah..
You think your love is so divine
Think you're the savior of mankind
You say your love is like love potion number nine

You say your love is all I crave
And I'm the dog whose had its day
So sad to rain on your parade
But I got better things to do than be your slave

I have doubts that the distorted electric and acoustic guitars on the right are old.

This song very much has a Paint It Black feel to me......

Same session as the not so inspired overdubbed solo?..

There's a distorted guitar that plays subtle parts throughout, sounds as if that iffy solo's are from the same guitar.

So subtle and timid it’s as if someone left a window open and the wind is playing with the strings.. (untill the solo comes)

I really like this new tune. The chorus is really catchy.

But why add a Keith guitar solo ? Always the same licks that you can hear in all the recent stuff.

Play some good @#$%& riffs man !

i think they did okay with this one - yeah, the keef break is no great shakes (prolly would have worked better to have bobby had a short sax break there)....

overall, one of the more enjoyable of the bonus trax....though it has about as much in common with exile stylistically as penny lane....

This might be one of the greatest songs of all time. I'm sorry man, I'm not sentimental, I love it all, but this thing took me away.

I'll say right here that it's the Stones trippiest effort since Satanic Majesties.

That's almost like what a shot of heroin is supposed to sound like. Xylophone in the background as your head explodes with the rush>

I have to agree somewhat with Brue. I listened to the 10 tracks the other night on a run, and this tune, as well as much of the whole thing, felt quite magical. There's the P.I.B. lick at the start, then it just lifts off. It's excellent, I think, new vocals and all.

I love how every chorus ends with Jagger shouting ----aaaatiooon...

Good god man he was right on Larry King when he said he wanted you to feel like you were back in '71 the whole time.

Does the melody of

You quickly pulled the pin
You had no hesitation

and the lines in that spot in the other verses sound like something from ABB?

It's been nagging at me, but I have not relistened to ABB to find it.

First I want to express my appreciation for how Mick managed to make a song of this.
The Alladin Story from the outtakes never really did anything to me. But now with Micks
lyrics, it suddenly became a very nice song. I would not have guessed this was possible.

Parts of the melody of the song have some resemblance to Everything is turning to gold,
but also to She saw me coming. At least, that's what I hear. I am sure a lot will not
agree.

exactly what i always thought....while listening to the instrumental bootleg numerous
times (for yrs)...always thought THIS DOESN'T SOUND LIKE THE STONES..what kind of lyrics/jagger
singing could make this a good song?? as Marco pointed out..Mick did it. Very nice.

IORR............but I like it!

I feel the song shows the legitimacy of the whole Exile rehash project. It’s the great reconciler… between past and present, the young and the old Mick, between the yes and nay sayers... It all comes together and works. Even Keiths solo somehow seems to find its place in the song solo after more listenings.
