My brief summation, after some time has passed, is that on first listen one hears all the flaws: The new Jagger vocal, the weak intro, etc. But then something wondrous happens: It starts it to sink in and possess you with its groove and catchiness. It infests you. You wake up with it in your head. You pull out a guitar to figure out the chords. This is precisely what a Rolling Stones song SHOULD do - and HASN'T done (to me at least) - for years. I remain convinced that that particular combination of individuals playing results in an alchemy that transcends even a fairly modest tune. In a word - I still love it!

Well put. I'll second to that. This song really made me rethink why I happen to love this particular band. One can analyze the song to pieces and claim all of it crap and what's wrong here and there but I don't give a damn. It's the best goddamn piece of noise I've heard for years. It really moves me.

The floating of A to B minor back to A with the E and D turns in there - I don't hear any open G style of playing if that's what some of you are saying there is. Perhaps this really is another song of that era that Keith had nothing to do with.

I'm not saying, however, that that does not mean Keith is not on it. I sure don't know for a fact, as no one else here does that I'm aware of. But I'm starting to suspect he ain't. Which would be fantastic irony. I bet he plays the 2009 overdubbed acoustic though.

Something must be wrong with me. I have never listened to Exile weekly for years. Or any other album.

Hi stonesrule, I think your comment was maybe in response to my saying that people may have differing takes on whether PMS has an "Exile sound," based on how frequently (or fanatically) they listen to Exile. Specifically saying that some of us listen to Exile on a weekly basis.

I don't think there's anything wrong with anyone according to their listening habits smiling smiley I have Exile in my iTunes shuffle and my CD player, along with music across many genres--brand spanking new and old. Exile is just part of my continual life soundtrack. So is Let It Bleed. Other Stones tunes and albums are not that far behind. smiling smiley

There's a B major too. And it's definitely open G. I can tell by the chord voicings. Very "Tumbling Dice".

Oh yeah, the B major. It almost sounds like a B 7th actually!

I love how these kind of songs do that, they play with the major and minor of one key or chord like that. Plundered is a perfect example of that.

Re: Plundered My Soul - reviews and comments

i didn't listen to it for a couple of days, just gave it a few spins and PMS sounds even better a week later! it's aging well. haha

one other thing you realize when listening to this is how much nicky hopkins added to the stones sound. he was such a crucial part of that combination of sound, melody and groove which made the '68-'72 run such a legendary one.

between the opening beats of Sympathy to the fade out riffing of Soul Survivor the Stones created a four volume masterpiece of studio work that has not nor will not ever be achieved by an artist again.

PMS and the other tracks coming out may not sound like EOMS (but whatever could really?) but they provide a nice sidebar piece or coda to an era when the stones defined and re-defined rock n roll on a yearly basis.

I totally agree Kissing...I have listened to it ten times this morning after giving it a break for a couple of days. Fantastic! Every bit of it! Thanks Mick. I just love it, very bright and full on Stones groove. Majestic guitar by Taylor. Love the cymbal smacks by charlie on the back beat! A total treat!

When first hearing Plundering My Soul, I couldn't get past the (IMO) POOR lyrics - and the obvious new vocals....not that I mind new vocals - but the whole thing sounded like an attempt of trying to recreate the "Exile-mood"....a bit forced.
Even wondered, and still wonder, if for instance the bassy horns are new overdubs....? If they are.....then it's forgery!
Anyway, I did get used to the new vocals after a few listens - and one can tell that Jagger (and also Charlie Watts) are the strongest bandmembers at this age; Jagger sings it well.....even if it's really different from the way he did it in 1972
So I have mixed emotions about it.....but all in all...I like Plundered My Soul - it has a nice groove....but it's impossible to just enjoy it and relax - like I can with other new & nice RS songs - like "Too Tight" - because Plundered seem like a bit of a bastard; like an antique, unique and slightly damaged work of art that has been copied and re-build up in plastic.....as a commercial for a travel-agency arranging flights to Athens.....placed on the floor next to the slick money-counting travelagent.
I guess I'd appreciate Plundering My Soul a lot more if I heard it on the radio or something, while doing something completely else - because it's pretty good on it's own - but alas....there's *something fishy* about it.
....unless it's just me who's crabby this week.....because it IS a nice song...

you're 100% right.

i marked him off 5% for poor punctuation and overuse of unnecessary ellipses. still, it's a solid A

they're holding u to the three dot rule on the elipses?? whoa tuff crowd...

Can you believe it… It’s almost as if Mick Jagger somehow knew nearly forty years ago that he’d someday be teasing us with that opening line to the “new” Rolling Stones song entitled “Plundered My Soul” which was actually recorded back during the Exile on Main Street sessions but never has seen the light of day until now. Released as an extremely limited thousand-copy run this week as part of Record Store Day, the song will actually serve as the lead single for Exile’s re-release on May 18th. Universal sent over an advance of the song, and after having spent some time with it, I can confirm that it definitely sounds like it was recorded in 1972 – that’s not a bad thing, mind you – and I’m also left to wonder how the band (and the label) managed to go this many years without finding a way to release it, seeing as how it’s a pretty darn good song.

It’s one of those plodding mid-tempo Stones songs with the meandering guitars in which Jagger’s vocals have a pliable relationship with the downbeat, and he sounds perfectly okay with the fact that he’s been taken by the lady who serves as the recipient of his lines even as he sings “I thought you needed my lovin’ but it’s my heart that you stole… I thought you wanted my money… but you plundered my soul.”

It’s not necessarily a vital song, and may not carve out a place in Rolling Stones history for any bigger reason than the novelty of having spent so many decades sitting in the vault before being sent to radio – and hey, it’s probably the best “new” Rolling Stones single in at least fifteen years.

I know, you don’t want to have to wait another month to hear the song – but if you’ve already waited four decades…

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

Well that is a very true sentence - the main thing about music is if one dig it or not. BUT "song-discussions" on this board is basically just efforts of trying to put into words "why one feel like one do about a song". It's not "analyzing" for the sake of "analyzing"....damn, I thought we agreed on this Doxa!
Concerning "Plundering My Soul".....I see both point of views; there's something great about it - and something.....else, I don't blame anyone for seeing only the positive - or negative sides. very diplomatic

Just listened to "Plundered My Soul." Amazing how he turned a lost "Exile" track into a "Bigger Bang" outtake. Terrible mix, lousy vocals (thanks, Mick - please stop over emoting) and cheesy Lisa Fischer-like fake gospel backing vocals. God, how awful...

Well, I disagree. I think it sounds great. And we can hear Bill again.smiling smiley I think Mick did a great job with the vocals. Best "new" song since 1983 IMO.

Yeah Don Was is a disaster on two legs... but he gives the Stones a "fresh" sound with every new album (= attracts new 10-16 y.o. fans) and that's ALL that matters to Jagger.
Of course the records produced by Was sound dated and old two years after they've been released but only we real fans care about that.

Mick's singing on PMS is just great!
He is back to the great kind of singing he created on the Exile album
way back then. He's doing the greatest job on the vocals as ever.

Backup vocals with LF is just the way it would have been if if were recorded for the Exile sessions!

Been Stoned since 1964 and still am!

I totally disagree as well. The production sounds fine! And he seems to get a pretty bad rap here, but I for one, haven't found his production bad. Bigger Bang has issues, but not so much because of him exclusively.
But PMS is fantastic! Bollocks to the nay sayers!

Personally I think that Don Was has made some great records with the Stones and I hope he continues to do so with them.

Voodoo Lounge, Stripped, Bridges To Babylon, A Bigger Bang.... All Great!

Bigger Bang is ruined by the modern mastering techniques which has nothing to do with Don. This is the only problem I have with any of those albums.

As for Plundered my Soul, it was unfinished in 1972, so they finished it in 2010.
For all we know, Don could've said it sucks too, but Mick and Keith decided to release it anyway. I think it would've been a lot worse if Don had asked mick to try and sing like he did in 1972, that would've sounded very false indeed.
I think the new vocal is cool, I love the hook and the lyrics are great.

Personally I prefer the finished track to be sat in my collection rather than sat unfinished rotting away in some vault, never to be heard.
