Lisa Fischer-like fake gospel backing vocals.

Send your studio credits to the Rolling Stones and why you should produce their next project. Be sure to attach some samples.

Just listened to "Plundered My Soul." Amazing how he turned a lost "Exile" track into a "Bigger Bang" outtake. Terrible mix, lousy vocals (thanks, Mick - please stop over emoting) and cheesy Lisa Fischer-like fake gospel backing vocals. God, how awful...
Maybe because Keith likes Don's work?Quote

What I really don't understand is how Keith Richards puts up with these results, his fingers might be gone but I am sure his hearing still 100%.

What he said. Record production isn't easy...there's a hell of a lot more to it than sitting in a chair up in the control booth saying "Do this" or "Don't do that." And Don Was has a pretty decent track record, like him or not.
I get the idea that the Stones are a very hard band to produce in general, especially with the separate Mick and Keith factions in the studio. I certainly don't envy Don Was trying to get something decent out of the group; it must be like pulling teeth. Hell, he must be doing something right- Don Was has been their producer longer than anyone 'cept The Glimmer Twins themselves! Sure, he may not be Jimmy Miller, but give me Was's old-school ways over Chris Kimsey's sterility any day. At this stage in the game the Stones need a producer, for good or ill.

When first hearing Plundering My Soul, I couldn't get past the (IMO) POOR lyrics - and the obvious new vocals....not that I mind new vocals - but the whole thing sounded like an attempt of trying to recreate the "Exile-mood"....a bit forced.
Even wondered, and still wonder, if for instance the bassy horns are new overdubs....? If they are.....then it's forgery!
Anyway, I did get used to the new vocals after a few listens - and one can tell that Jagger (and also Charlie Watts) are the strongest bandmembers at this age; Jagger sings it well.....even if it's really different from the way he did it in 1972
So I have mixed emotions about it.....but all in all...I like Plundered My Soul - it has a nice groove....but it's impossible to just enjoy it and relax - like I can with other new & nice RS songs - like "Too Tight" - because Plundered seem like a bit of a bastard; like an antique, unique and slightly damaged work of art that has been copied and re-build up in plastic.....as a commercial for a travel-agency arranging flights to Athens.....placed on the floor next to the slick money-counting travelagent.
I guess I'd appreciate Plundering My Soul a lot more if I heard it on the radio or something, while doing something completely else - because it's pretty good on it's own - but alas....there's *something fishy* about it.
....unless it's just me who's crabby this week.....because it IS a nice song...
I see what you mean, Erik, and that's exactly what I thought at the first few listens. And it's also true that this song seems just like an endless flow, very jam-like, and still ... that little bastard is a grower, slowly creeping in. I just bet, it'll get you too... just play it on your stereo (or if that doesn't help, think of Tattoo You ;-)

i think jack white's approach would be too much old school for mick to handle, white likes to do things quick and simple when it comes to recording and i doubt he would use protools to make an album.he likes to use vintage analog equipmentQuote

To get off the topic of producer (I don't have a huge problem with Was btw, though I wouldn't mind them trying somebody a little newer like Jack White), I keep noticing something missing here: a good guitar break. It's all lyrics, and not terribly good ones. It REALLY hurts the flow here, imo, with no break or solo to keep things interesting. It wouldn't even have to be a full on solo, just something a la 'Jumping Jack Flash' with a nice chord-based riff. Oh well, what done is done ... I just think it would have made the overall song a little better.
