Hopefully nobody feels offended when I say that this song is boring and bad.

You deserve to be keel-hauled for that statement! Just kidding, BTW.

Anyone who has never heard the original by Arthur Alexander or indeed has never heard the great man should check him out right away. Other classics he recorded are Soldier Of Love, Anna, and A Shot of Rhythm And Blues (covered by The Beatles), Go Home Girl (covered by Ry Cooder) and many other fabulous songs.

A Shot of Rhythm And Blues

Is that the one Dave Edmunds covered (phantastic version) - but it has a certain "Thompson" as composer.

Yeah, that's the one. The Flamin' Groovies did a great version too.

Ringo plays a mean hi-hat cymbal here.

Well, it doesn't bore me - even if this last clip seems to be at slightly the wrong speed? This is one of the earliest clips of them live, and it's still Bill and Brian doing all the backup vocals (for those who have been saying in Another Thread that you don't often hear Brian's singing voice) and Brian doing all the acoustic guitar work. There are two live versions of this on Beat Beat Beat At The Beeb which sound as if they follow the same arrangement.

Always been a favourite of mine - one of the first Stones numbers I grew to love. I used to spin my dad's copy of the Stones debut EP quite a bit

Was that a live performance on the TV show? Or just lip-synching?

only lead vocals live i would say.

I always thought this was a live rendition. Perhaps it's Jagger singing over a pre-recorded backing-track. IMO, it sounds a little different to the EP version.

Well, there's Brian playing some good acoustic guitar and singing to boot. According to some posters on this site, this is the only track Brian plays acoustic guitar in a Stones record. And the sun will set east tonight . . .

I have to say the Artur Alexander original is better than the Stones take, though they do cover it quite well.

how do you like the song in general, neptune? Think it's a good performance by the group?

Brian Jones announced his departure June 8th at his home in Hartfield, Sussex, stating: "I want to play my kind of music, which is no longer the Stones music."

He said the split was amicable and that he and the Stones will remain close friends. But, as he restated, "The music Mick and Keith have been writing has progressed at a tangent, as far as my own taste is concerned."

Was Brian telling the truth, or was he just making up an excuse for his leaving the group?

I was responding to your question about Brian Jones.

It's all right, cc. I like Charlie's drumming. The rest of the stuff is pretty standard and OK. Keith looks bored out of his mind. Not a typical Stones song by any stretch, probably something that was suggested by ALO. Of note was Brian playing an acoustic and his vocals (along with Bill) . . . not a bad live performance.

Attention WindMelody. Pardon me for explaining that one of the great things music gives us is a sense of history, of eras, of great writers and performers.
The 60's were an education for young music lovers.

SO Arthur Alexander was one of the greats..and You Better Move On is a fine, fine song.

And WindMelody don't you ever dare knock any any early song, blues or otherwise, recorded by the Stones!!! Next you'll be complaining about Muddy Waters or Willie Dixon.

Further, both Fritz Lang and Billy Wilder admired, understood, the Stones and their music in the 1960s.

>> probably something that was suggested by ALO <<

according to timeisonourside.com it was in the Stones' stage repertoire even in 1962

>> It is an Arthur Alexander number, and as much R&B as Memphis or Road Runner.
We have been using it in our act for ages and it has always gone down well;
that's why we decided to record it. <<
- Mick Jagger, February 1964 (quoted on [www.timeisonourside.com] )

but yeah, in this rendition (which nzentgraf indicates is a full-fledged performance, not playback)
it's always amused me how bored Keith appears - he does everything but yawn! :E
and i love the lone scream that bursts from the audience (i bet they'd been sternly told to behave)
and the way Mick struggles not to smile at it

great number and i love the Stones' very young take on it

I can't believe that they put microphones in front of charlie's bassdrum, an overhead microphone above Charlie, one in front of Brian's acoustic guitar, just to let us think they play live.

Of course, The Stones also performed I Wanna Be Your Man, as well.

IMO, this footage carries a little extra charm, knowing that it’s the earliest existing televised performance from our boys.
