Sister Morphine gone?
Posted by: CousinC ()
Date: February 22, 2010 16:45

Just wanted to go on Sister M.'s site to look for setlists of some of their boots like Voodoo mass & fetishes. But it seems to be gone.
Does anybody know more about this?

I know some are very critical about them.

But has there been any official statement that they close down and close their website?

Re: Sister Morphine gone?

Yes CousinC, they have shut down. never did understand the over violent criticism they evoke in some.

They would take already excellent sources, process the life out of them and sell their cdr's at real silver disc prices...never heard one of their titles which sounded better than the source they nicked...............

Re: Sister Morphine gone?

correct, they copied many VGP titles and claimed they were better, but of course they were not

When they first started they had quite a few original sources and VG nicked theirs too!

To be honest they gave ONE recording to the Stones community : the 97 "Closer Than Close" rehearsals!
You can add to te report some very nice tapes of the Oakland'97 & 99 shows. Other than that, SM was the Xerox machine of boot labels...

SM were the first out with a decent rec of the Babylon Vegas show (VG and CMB came out first with theres but they sucked) Their Oalkand 99 show was a new recording. Their first edition of the RIO show with Dylan was the first decent transfer (VG's first release of this sucked). It was more than "one" recording! I WAS let down towards the end though.

VGP has copied from everybody like all bootleggers do. They arent the "Holy Grail" of bootleg labels. They've put out some fantastic stuff but they also have released some of the biggest turds in boot history too.

"VGP never copied a SM title"

yes they did ; the copied the "Closer Than Close" title and put it out as a "no label" release but it was indeed a vgp. the "funny thing is there was a glitch on the SM cd-r vgp used so LARS was incomplete on their "no label" version...

IIrc the Dutch label RS was the 1st of offer a clean sliver rip of the SM cd-r

Just wondered if this so called band "SM"(honestly I've never heard of them) has checked with the Rolling Stones or ABCKO about the use of the name? All respect intended-an honest question.

Re: Sister Morphine gone?

if you do a small amount of investigation you'll find the band sister morphine was signed to [emeraldcityrecords.com] of hollywood. the band itself was the first and only band from the 80's to use that name. a band does not need permission to use a name, as an example the band 'godsmack' was taken from the band alice in chains. a song title can be a band name if it's not being used by another existing band.

Just clicked on the preview tracks on the CDbaby website, good grief that was horrible, they sound as bad as they look!
No wonder they only made one album 21 years ago.
I'd rather have the record label back.

I agree. NO matter how one felt about the "SM" boot label( which obviously no one that mattered in the Stones hiarchy cared about) they provided a wanted service to SOME FANS!And they get screwed over by THIS bunch?? THANKS-GUYS! Since you seemingly dont care about Stones fans what are you even doing here(other than to promote yourselves!) Other than the initial post that pertained to THE SUBJECT of what happened to the label, this looks to me like it would fall under BV's rule of "not applying to The Stones"! (thats just my opinion, not a criticism of the administrator)

Re: Sister Morphine gone?

"they provided a wanted service to SOME FANS!"

I don't agree : providing a service to the U.S. (who for the most art were deprived of European silver boots) would have been to offer cd-r copies for a symbolic low price. SM charged full premium for them eye rolling smiley

Re: Sister Morphine gone?
Posted by: scottkeef ()

I see your point but at the time SM started Vinyl Gang titles were bringing 70 bucks a title in some areas. All I meant was (until the internet age which made sharing so great or to somone that still doesnt have access) some people were willing to pay for it and wanted it. Lets face it ,ALL bootleggers are ripping us off to an extent! I guess "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I mainly just think its a shame ANY outlet is shut down because of bozos like these guys.

it's glam rock. what was the style for the 80's... they are not supposed to sound like the rolling stones you morons. they took the name because they respected the music of the stones... showing respect and you guys are jackasses with your immature comments. awww... you want some cheese to go with that whine? @#$%&' bunch of babies. grow the @#$%& up already. intellectual properties like copyrights, trademarks etc. are protected by law. so the cease and desist was court ordered and within the rights of the label that owns the name sister morphine... emeraldcityrecords. grow up.
