great chorus , shame about the verse

i love the chorus, especially the longer one , and its chord progression .In comparison ,the verse seems almost an aftertought , one chord and basic melody.
any other songs like that?

I hated it when it came out, as it was their "we are still alive
and ready to rock" reminder but it wasn´t the rock I had expected.

First single should have been Sad Sad Sad.

Mixed Emotions hasn't aged well...and being the lyric was inter-personal between Mick and Keith...in 2010 hard to believe that was a single...still love Rock and A Hard Place...Almost Hear You Sigh is one of the best ballads they ever did...and Slipping Away is priceless...the rest is not really that noteworthy in their long career...but as a fan I enjoy the whole album and seldom skip any track when I put it on.

To me it still is a great album! I just love it! From beginning to end!
Also love the remixes from Mixed Emotions and Terrifying (both 12").

Here in Holland Mixed Emotions still gets airplay on an 80's/90's radiostation.

The only single - except Miss You that was a different matter though as a long jam - which was well done as a maxi single mix version!

I like Mixed Emotions much better tha the forced mega-80s sound of Rock and a Hard Place.

Nah, it's good. No need to over think it. It's 'up'. It kicks, nice melody, great chorus. Not an outstanding song or single but for me it still holds up. In a musical sense anyway.

A fine later day effort. It really creates it's own energy, unlike much of it's peer group.

I loved it. I was so excited about new Stones material and played it to death, the 12" vinyl version. Dayo

It's sure nice to have a thread about a song. I like this one and generally agree with Skip, but I also agree with StrayCat that the verse is not as interesting or engaging as the chorus. It's in the middle for me..

It sounded very fresh after Dirty Work and the long layoff. If felt like the Stones were back, even though it was a bit paint-by-numbers formulaic Stones song. I don't think anything on ABB was as good, frankly.

Yes, hypothetically, Mixed Emotions would be the best song on ABB by far.

Great single, killer chorus, the verse seems a little lazy but what else should it be?

I kind of wished during the last couple of tours they would have dug this one out.

My friend and I bought Steel Wheels with great excitement...smileys with beer

but listened to it with genuine disappointment.sad smiley

The song Mixed Emotions ranks at the bottom along with Emotional Rescue (the song).
What a complete buzz-kill and letdown.thumbs downthumbs down

I think its a pretty good song. The verses including the opening lines are to me actually more catchy than the chorus and that makes it more memorable than the usual filler. Thats the first part that comes to mind whin I think of ME... "Button your lip baby, button your coat..."

I think it, along with all the SW tracks except Terrifying, is highly underrated in the Stones cannon. If they'd recorded those songs in '94, when they'd grown out of the '80s production sheen, then Mixed Emotions, Rock and a Hard Place, Sad Sad Sad, Can't Be Seen would be remembered with the rest of their later day classics, I think.

It's a shame the album made such a quick exit live (except Slipping Away, but again, that's more remembered because of the Stripped arrangement than it's place on Steel Wheels).

I've always like Mixed Emotions compared with the outright crap Dirty Work that preceded it its a slice of heaven!

Boy I loved it when it first came out. The Stones were back!!! And the chorus made up for the verse, I thought.

Like the song, like the album, loved the tour! Great memories after waiting 8 long years to see them again and some bad albums in between.

Great Keith's song
Great guitar riffing around one single grooving chord (in the verse)
Very emotive melodic chorus
Nice Keith's harmony vocals

Mixed Emotions is an ok pop song. It sent a good message to the fanbase after two very dark albums (Undercover + Dirty Work) that left many people thinking the Stones were breaking up.

"Sad,Sad,Sad" might have been a better lead single in retrospect followed by "Mixed Emotions" and "Out of Tears"... "Rock in a Hard Place" just sounds way to 80's for my taste.

It's one of their best songs from the last 20 years.

"Mick's demotion"

Really weak lyrics and could've done with being a bit faster. The most fun I had with this track was watching MJ and KR in the studio on 25x5.

This is a good song, but the album had better possibilities for singles, such as "Sad Sad Sad" and "Almost Hear You Sigh".
I agree that it's better than most songs on ABB
