Don’t Lie To Me
(Chuck Berry)

Regent Sound Studios, London, UK, May 12, 1964

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric guitar
Ian Stewart - piano

Well, let's talk it over baby, before we start
I heard about the way you used to do your part
Don't lie to me, don't you lie to me
Don't you make me mad, I'll get evil as a man can be

Well, all kinds of people that I just can't stand
That's a lying woman and a cheating man
Don't lie to me, don't you lie to me
Don't you make me mad, I'll get evil as a man can be, yeah, you know it

Well, I will love you baby and it ain't no lie
Swap me with ya ‘till the well run dry
Don't lie to me, don't you lie to me
Don't you make me mad, I'm as shook up as a man can be

Well, let's talk it over baby, before we start
I heard about the way you used to do your part
Don't lie to me, don't you lie to me
Cause you make me mad, I'm as shook up as a man can be

Well, well, well, let's talk it over babe, before we start
I heard about the way you used to do your part
Don't lie to me, don't you lie to me
Cause it makes me mad, I'll get evil as a man can be

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Metamorphosis” LP
(Decca SKL 5212) UK, June 6, 1975

i think this song recorded during the chess sessions june 10/11 1964

wide stereo mix.. but on metamorphosis more mono mix.

I don´t think the sound of the guitars and the piano matches that of the Chess recordings.

It's clearly a Chess recording.
Listen to the clearness of the drums and Jagger's vocals and you have the proof!

Another evidence is the "stereo" sound (Yes, I know, this mix is almost mono, but you can definitly hear stereo separation.) The Stones didn't make a full stereo recording at all at Regent Sound Studios. It was always recorded in pure mono.

Recorded 1964 and I first heard it 1975 with the release of Metamorphosis!
Quite remarkable cause it is on a top ten list over songs with Stones from the sixties I think. Great litte rocker!

Somewhat bizarrely played live once in Texas on the 72 tour.

Afterwards Jagger said something like "Did that just happen?"

I liked that live version. But the attempt of doing Sweet Black Angel didn't work that well, imo...

Wow - thanks for alerting me to the existence of this one! Definitely one of the few occasions where I prefer the original to the Stones' version.

Such a cool guitar sound on this one. Otherwise, a rather generic cover. IMO (or is that understood? smiling bouncing smiley)

Well, it's predictable (because you, Dandelion, and I seem to have an almost opposite taste when it concerns the Stones), but I have to say that I like SBA live, Fort Worth June 24, 1st show. I like the guitars too. I've uploaded it on YT because it's also a rare version.

There's this steamy live version with Taylor.
The Stones on fire. Richards/Perks and Watts together playing like concrete. Great Taylor guitar solo. Heard it a 1000 times, still can't get enough.

Is this your's Kleermaker?

No Amsterdamned, it's not on my YT-channel, Sweet Black Angel is. But I have the song. It should be on L&G. It's from one of those 4 Texan 1972 concerts (Fort Worth, 2nd).
