"thats rather a sign for very good music if the people on the street dont know it!!"
that´s far too easy and arrogant!

there is plenty of really bad music out there that nobody knows.

also by that logic.

is Jumping Jack Flash, Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter bad because people on the street know it?

is Miles Davis, The Beatles, Hendrix,Led Zeppelin shit because peolpe know it.

exile has it´s moments, but it´s not their best and definately not what the band is all about. in fact it´s a very unstonesy album. You can hear the special style of mick and keith way better an other records. I think Mick not only dislikes the mix but also the music. i think he is right, and why shouldn´t he?

Bill just did 8 tracks on it...Overrated album!

So Sticky Fingers is overrated as well,´cause Keith is missing on some tracks ?

Exile can´t be overrated.

Exile is a manifest !
< and THAT'S why it's overrated...

...could go on and on...

Which one is less of a Stones album? Exile with Bill missing on 20 of the tracks or Fingers with Keith missing on 10 of 'em?

Which begs the question, which one of them is the most Rolling Stone? Is Bill replaceable? Yes - since he hasn't played bass on every song on every album, he was already being replaced.

Keith...well, he isn't on every song either but is on most songs of all albums.

So in pure Bill and Keith Stonesness, Let It Bleed and Beggars Banquet a true Rolling Stones albums because Keith and Bill play on more of those LP tracks then they do on Fingers and Exile, making those two less Stonesey.

opinions are like @#$%&, everybody's got one. ;-)

normaly i'd say: each his own, but concerning exile i have to be strict:
if you dont "get" exile you dont understand the rolling stones...simple as that!

Havo

For raisng some malicious outrage on this board

Thou should be well respected and considered as a good-mannered person (after all, it's a Stones forum, so who shocks well behaves)

So do not care about the ill-advised people

Even I do not agree with thou

After all, Jagger also said Exile was overrated

Of course Exile is over-rated if you (a) believe Jagger (b) believe Richards ("Best Stones yet"), (c) believe all the people who think "Brian is the thing that makes the Stones special"), (d) etc.

There are a lot of arguments to defend these positions. grinning smiley

I am not putting anyone down out there for their likes and dislikes and what they think is better than Exile. It really is a matter of opinion. i just don't think that some people truly "get" what Exile is all about maybe not even the Stones themselves I have heard Mick say it was overated but it does appear that this is the album the band has picked to finally do something extra with so maybe they feel its their best work now as well.

What's funny is the Stones fans I've known over the years go with Bleed and Fingers being their best and some of them then say after those two it's Tattoo You, Some Girls and then Exile. So it ain't that great for everyone.

It's a double album, a lot of songs, one big hit and, totally redundant now, on tour not many songs from it played. As in, it's a doublefuckin' album and they didn't even play half of it. Which, not redundantly, says a lot.

Now when they play tunes from it, they don't wander too much outside of the - the most difficult song is Rocks Off of the bunch:

Tumbling Dice
Happy
Rocks Off

Over the recent years as well:
Sweet Virginia
All Down The Line
Stop Breaking Down
Loving Cup
Rip This Joint
Shine A Light

That's basically an album's worth of tunes, all of those. And that's, what, half of the album?

A lot of the songs on the album I don't think would work live unless they were in a club.

"What's funny is the Stones fans I've known over the years go with Bleed and Fingers being their best and some of them then say after those two it's Tattoo You, Some Girls and then Exile"

that could be my list as well, though i miss goat´s head soup somewhere.

The only reason why no particular song stands out is that they are all great.

Every single track is powerful by itself: strong melodies, superb grooves, wonderful arrangements. And not only the guitar parts: just focus on the vocals, the choruses, the bu vocals, or the keyboards, or the horns ...

God belss this album!

i Know, somebody will disagree! Its a great album --for sure. but---where is a song like "Midnight Rambler" Or "Sympathie"?.. Casino boogie--"turd on the run--i just seen his face---soul survivour--are "fillers" --I mentioned "Beggars" and "Bleed"-but what i like most is "Aftermath" and "out of our heads".
if you dont like exile ,then may i recomend you enjoy someone else band and music .why even post on a stones board if you dont like exile ?

Now that's not fair.Havo wpuldn't be on this board if he didn't have great affection and appreciation for The Stones.Exile on the main street may as well be the quintessential stones record but The Stones would still be where they are even if they hadn't recorded it.They had an amazing body of work even before Exile so it's just one of their masterpieces that adds to their amazing legacy.

Musically Exile is around no 8 on my best of Stones-album-list..The fact is that there is just about 4 or 5 really good songs on that bleeding double-album...

Me too. Exile is more than an album, it's like a mythical place or a state of mind. And the reason it's my favorite album of all time is that it is soooo deep, I never tire of it.

Oh, and of course this is just my opinion but to argue that songs like Let It Loose , Torn and Frayed and Soul Survivor are filler is just......misguided. But to each their own.

League Office has been terrorized with this statement. The three best songs on the album have been trashed. Close down this thread. We must impose sanctions. This has really pissed me off.

To me, if you judge Exile song by song, you have not undestrand the album.
Exile is a concept, is all about rock, is a only song long 60 minutes XD

Well said, farawayeyes 2. Exile takes you somewhere else. It's an often-sleazy "somewhere else" and it's brilliantly done. Most, if not all, of the tracks belong there. They wouldn't fit as well on any other Stones album.

If I could only ever listen to one Stones album, it would be Exile.

Each to his (or her) own of course.

The only bad thing I can say about that beautiful old thing is that it makes me want to do things that are decidedly not good for me. But that's my prob.

All of the tracks are there only because they used some leftovers and wanted to get them out. Otherwise it would be a much shorter album.
