Exile's a great album, not their best by any means. But the live versions on the '72 tour are much better than the album versions.

It is a classic piece of music. Always if I here it after a long time I find it getting better and better, and this over nearly 40 years. It is unmatched in history of Rhythm and Blues.

Exile on Main Street is the best album that the Rolling Stones have ever made, It takes multiple listening to get it and it kind of has to grow on you but it has sinister sound and is just a phenomenal piece of music.

I can understand people liking other albums better as they have more "commercial" appeal but Exile is the ultimate Stones album and it just may be the best rock and roll record ever made!

if you´d go on the street. how many people do you think could name one song from exile ??? it´s definately not the best they´ve done, it´s kind of ok.

That's because it's not a greatest hits album. Exile is the Stones' true masterpiece, a work of art in the truest sense. It's funny, I can dip into their other studio albums for favourite tracks, but when I put on Exile, I always end up listening to the whole album. As has been said, it is greater than the sum of its parts and, for me, it epitomises what I love most about the Stones' music, its roots and their attitude.

thats rather a sign for very good music if the people on the street dont know it!!! ;-)

that may sounds hard and dont get it as a personal attack, but if someone doesnt like exile, to me, he doesnt really love the essence of the rolling stones. exile in its entire beauty and greatness IS the rolling stones! the feel, the mood, the sound, the lyrics, the look....
peace!

In what way is this an argument re. the quality of this album?
That's like saying "I'm too sexy for my shirt" is the greatest song ever because every moron knows it.

Well you have heard the chorus of discontent with your statement. Really, to gauge Exile's greatness by what songs the average joe knows is .... well... not to logical. Mass appeal does not necessarily equate to good art..... Exile really is an accidental gem that should have failed beyond belief. Addictions, outlaw status, vicious hanger oners, band discord and dysfunction. Out of it came a accidental concept album about America, decay, decadence, and beauty. Truly, Exiles on Main Street. Rock, country, blues, gospel, boogie woogie...and walk through a musical museum. I actually get nervous about the upcoming release, that they will tinker with the production because Mick has never liked it. BOLLACKS! It is punk nihilism. Jagger uses his voice as one of the many instruments to be heard along side everything else. What does he really say there? What was that? And when you finally decode it, it all makes sense! Sorry but Exile is a sublime piece of rock history.

Mick did never say, that he does not like it. He only said, that he would like to remix it, that´s all.

YEah, I have read in several interviews where he says he isn't proud of the mix, and that he did most of it because no one else was around.

whiteM8 - Well stated. you have to take the sum of the parts this album is a masterwork!

When informed that Exile on Main Street was the highest-placed Rolling Stones album in a 1987 critics' poll of the Top 100 Rock Albums, former bassist Bill Wyman remarked with irony that it had received the roughest reception of any Stones album at the time of release. It set itself up for the obvious criticism of all double albums that it would have been better had the best tracks been distilled on to one disc. There were remarks that the sleeve was particularly obnoxious, featuring a gallery of freaks in passport-quality photos and the Stones' name only in handwritten scrawl. Though a number one in both the US and UK, Exile stayed near the top for a shorter time than its predecessor, Sticky Fingers, and "Tumbling Dice," the lead single, did nowhere near as well as "Brown Sugar."

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

SwayStones - What does commercial success mean that it is not so good? Look at the stuff that's at the top of the charts today! Just because its successful does not equal good.

I agree that it is overrated though still a great album. I think Beggars & Let It Bleed & Sticky Fingers piss all over it.
I actually prefer Satanic Majesties too but I recognise that will appear a little left field to some...

Graetest ever. IJWSHF is a cracker.

"All down the line" and "Rocks off" were obvious hits but not released as singles for some reason.

"Tumbling dice" was a top ten hit both sides of the Atlantic so how there was "no real hit".

And Havo - I think you're looking to be "killed" - ie attention. Nobody really gives a stuff if you prefer other albums to Exile. Hell get into Backstreet Boys for all I care. It's just opinion.

no real "superstar" song on this album...but very evenly good which makes it great.
For instance, Rocks Off as intro song to the album is nowhere near as good as Gimme Shelter, SFTD or Brown Sugar...

However, the acoustic side is superb,Let it Loose excellent and the album closer "Soul Survivor" is terrific, but All Down The Line is much better live.

To me, if you judge Exile song by song, you have not undestrand the album.
Exile is a concept, is all about rock, is a only song long 60 minutes XD
