Perhaps it depends on which version - but here I think it's a Stratocaster.

but you hardly get a glimpse of it...

I see that big Zemaitis headstock too, but the pickguard has that conventional Gibson shape. TZ did not seem to favor that.

It is a Zemaitis, much like the famous George Harrison Zemaitis. The best shot I have of it is from a '85 or so guitar magazine with a Wood interview, and if I am not mistaken it's also lined up at a backstage shot from the New Barbs tour in that book with the Newman Jones fold out guitar.
